Scrappile Posted February 7, 2016 Report Posted February 7, 2016 This is a question about patterns. When I want to enlarge a pattern I often get jagged lines as show in the picture. Is there software like Inkscape that will smooth out the lines. Seems like I read about this somewhere but I have not been able to find where I did if I did. Maybe it was a dream, you know how us addicts dream about scroll'n.... Quote

Scrappile Posted February 7, 2016 Author Report Posted February 7, 2016 Doesn't it have something to do with pixels or dots per something?? Quote
LarryEA Posted February 7, 2016 Report Posted February 7, 2016 Look up anti alaising ... or you can search for fixing jagged photo edges. A bit beyond what I could explain.... Quote
Kepy Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 I'm old school. A pencil works fine. JimErn 1 Quote
Travis Posted February 8, 2016 Report Posted February 8, 2016 When you enlarge a bitmap, you'll get those jagged edges (depending on how much you enlarge it). You can use Inkscape to smooth it out so its easier to see. You can find a tutorial here: http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/articles.html/_/pattern-making/inkscape/prepare-a-pattern-for-printing-using-inkscape-r22 Quote
Scrappile Posted February 8, 2016 Author Report Posted February 8, 2016 Exactly what I was looking for Travis. Thank you, I knew I had seen it somewhere. Quote
crupiea Posted February 15, 2016 Report Posted February 15, 2016 I just use a pencil to smooth them out. if you blow a picture up big enough its going to do this unless its bug to start with. Pencil removes the worry. Quote
scbridge Posted March 19, 2016 Report Posted March 19, 2016 I believe the original image was a raster (JPEG, PNG, etc). These files are limited in how large you can scale them before pixelation occurs. In order to smooth this image out, you could bring it into Adobe Illustrator and re-trace the image, thus turning them into points, and essentially a vector file (AI, EPS, and sometimes PDF). Vector files are ideal for anything that may be used on a larger scale in the near/far future, as no detail will be lost no matter the scale. I've included a link that explains this in more detail: http://vector-conversions.com/vectorizing/raster_vs_vector.html Quote
Dave Monk Posted March 22, 2016 Report Posted March 22, 2016 Travis, Is there a place on the site that all your tutorials are are listed and grouped together? The University doesn't seem to have all of them. dave Quote
Scrappile Posted March 22, 2016 Author Report Posted March 22, 2016 Dave if you click on "Articles" in the darker blue bar at the top of each page I believe it is the "tab" bar, it will take you to all the tutorial. To get to the tutorials on "Gimp", "Inkscape" they are listed in the "Categories" section on the right side of the first page. Travis and Dave Monk 2 Quote
