Start on "junk" wood and something that you not not value!

Remember to keep the point clean!

Fine sandpaper glued/stapled to a very smooth wooden block will work well for cleaning points!

Clean often; remember that it can burn things you do not expect it too also! SO BE VERY careful about where/how you set down the hot burner.

Practice is the only way to improve. You can go back over to darken too! You try the different points to see what you are comfortable with. I use a small needle nose pliers for changing hot tips. I then lay them on some metal  surface to cool.

Just a quick question about wood burning. Do I need to use a pattern for wood burning, or is it just free hand? Thanks! P.s. (getting my first wood burning kit tomorrow) :)

Soft wood burns best but pine is grainy and doing a strait line every time you go over a grain it leaves a dot.Balsa wood is cheap and real soft to practice on.

unless your artistic ,I'd use a pattern.

For cleaning the tips I use a special shaped scraper made by Razortip and wipe clean with a leather hide. Transferring patterns can be done using tracing paper or freehand. Myself I prefer burning onto Baltic Birch Ply. The burning system I use is Razortip (razortip.com) manufactured an hour from where I live. Great system.
