Inkscape Question - Intersecting Word Art

I am trying to put a single character on the big words of an Intersecting word art.

 

If I do 2 or 3 characters using object to path, ungroup and union I get a path that I can use.

 

If I have a singe character (like & or any other character I can't end up at a path.

 

I take the character and go object to path I only get "Group of 1 object".  So then it won't let me use as cookie cutter.

 

I have tried various fonts and characters all with same output.

 

Any ideas how to get to path??

As I type this a thought came to me I-----

 

Why not put 2 characters in & and -.

 

I did that and created path and they edited the path and deleted the dash and all is good.

Don, I'm not sure why it didn't work the first time. I tried it and it worked fine. I'm glad you found a workaround for it.
