breadstick Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 I've been considering getting a home warranty. I have all the homeowners insurance USAA offers, but it doesn't cover hvac and other things. For those of you that have it, how do you like it? Worth having? How easy was it to use when you needed to? Quote

Phantom Scroller Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 I have no idea what you talking about but over here we have house insurance with covers everything in the house and everything in the workshop and rebuild of the house should it burn down or fall down all in one. I had a lightening strike on the house which fried my tv satellite and video recorder plus my phone went through to the kitchen and fried the door of the dishwasher and I received new for old for £50 well worth it. bandaideman Posted May 20, 2016 Report Posted May 20, 2016 I also use USAA and have for over 40 years. I am not sure what hvac insurance is but suspect you are talking catastropy like flood or tornado or what ever. I have used homeowners with them and really have been pleased with service and time getting things done and paid. I had a cement truck wheel hub and all come off near my home and it rolled in to my house. Missed our bedroom where we were sleeping but sure did put a large opening into the brick and closet walls knock everything out of them. moved the freeze board about 3-4 inches and broke some of the wall 2x4s. We called them and they took over called the restoration company they were out with in an hour. shored up and covered everything right then. They got the money rolling and paid for it. 2 weeks later I found the company that owned the truck and so the paid the insurance. Really a good experience other than a hysterical wife for the entire time of having repair done. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
Dan Posted May 21, 2016 Report Posted May 21, 2016 Do your research and read the fine print. We bought a house and had a one year homeowner warranty. We discovered a Crack in the foundation. A cracked foundation was covered, but since the crack was on a cistern wall, they would not cover it. If the covered appliances are in good working order, save your money and just pay a serviceman to do annual or biennial service. Quote
Lucky2 Posted May 21, 2016 Report Posted May 21, 2016 I've never heard of this type of insurance, what if something just wears out? Would you expect an insurance company to cover that? You do know that you can be insurance poor, right? Some types of insurance are just a waste of money, they never pay out. Len Quote
Kepy Posted May 21, 2016 Report Posted May 21, 2016 You would probably be ahead to open a savings account and every month put the premium in the account so that any emergency would be covered and if no emergency, you still have the money. 125 CSL and Lucky2 2 Quote
joleet Posted May 21, 2016 Report Posted May 21, 2016 I agree with Kepy, our kitchen appliances, furnace, water heater and air conditioning is over 15 years old. That's a lot of premium costs that would add up in a savings account. Lucky2 1 Quote

That's a great way to do it. I always try to save versus pay in advance. Just like insurance, if you don't use it you just handed your money to someone else. Lucky2 1 Quote
WayneMahler Posted May 23, 2016 Report Posted May 23, 2016 Around here it is a great selling point. I guess it has it's limits as does everything else. My son has one in Texas and has used it but has has a deductible he has to pay. Pro's and Con's to everything. Quote
Lucky2 Posted May 24, 2016 Report Posted May 24, 2016 We have a separate savings account, that is for household repairs only. Once money is deposited to that acct, it can't be used for anything other than house repairs or appliance replacement. I deposit $150.00 every month into that acct, I like to have enough money saved for any major expences. Len Quote
jblock9907 Posted May 27, 2016 Report Posted May 27, 2016 I have American Home Shield. There is a $75.00 copay but sometimes its worth it. I had the mother board replaced in my pool heater. I found it on line for over $400. Got a new one, installed for $75. Also had a water heater replaced. I like it. We have used it several times. BUT, if I can fix it for less than $75.00, then I do it myself. Quote
