Earth Pigments

Hi there I was wondering if any one can help me. I have a whole load of Earth Pigments From burnt umber to Vandyke brown. My problem is what are these used for and how do I mix them. If anyone can help I will be forever grateful.

         I bought them when I was at university as part of a French Polishing kit, But I have forgot what they are for and how to mix them.
