heppnerguy Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 (edited) Today I tackled the enclosed pattern and ended up with a lot of questions so I have a request. Beginning a new task of learning to make patterns, I decided on this Buffalo Bill portrait and quickly learned that I have more questions than I have knowledge. As you can see by my enclosed pattern attempt, I was not sure how to do the fringe on his coat, although the last ones I did, on the left side of the portrait, I feel I was doing better by that point but still was baffled by the other area of fringe. I also tried several times to add some of the facial shade areas but after 3 attempts I erased it all and ended up with what you see. This is only my second portrait pattern I have made in my new year pattern goal. I am wanting to understand how to do the facial shading and this I was unable to accomplish . So here is my request to some of the pattern makers here in The Village family. I am enclosing the picture that I used to try and make this pattern and I am hoping that a couple of pattern makers might also make this pattern using the facial shading so I can have a couple of examples of how I should have gone about in order to end up with what I was after. I Hope this finds some of you with some extra time on your hands to help me out on this. I know it would be a big help to me and once I start understanding these patterns and get comfortable with them, I hope to help other beginners like myself Dick heppnerguy Edited January 8, 2017 by heppnerguy lawson56, Scrolling Steve, woodknots and 1 other 4 Quote

Lucky2 Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 Dick, for someone who is just starting out as a pattern designer, you sure are taking on some ambitious projects. I like what you have done with this one so far, but, the brim of his hat is a floater. It is an easy fix, but, I thought that since you're just starting out as a pattern designer, that you might want to be told about this? Len Quote

Funny thing is,,,,,,that is the last thing I added and was debating on not having it as part of the pattern. Off to make the correction... Good eye, my friend....thanks again for your comments... Dick heppnerguy Dick, it's a nice addition, and I wouldn't remove it. If it was my pattern, I would just attach it at the end that the shadows are supposed to be running from. It is a nice feature that separates the brim from the top. Len Quote
lawson56 Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 Dick ,Man you are doing Fantastic When you decide to pick one you pick a good one.I got started on it for ya.As you can see I left out the sky,but the mountains are still there,as are the shadow's in his face,(as best I could). The Fringe shouldn't be to much of a problem.Your coming along Great. Birchbark Posted January 8, 2017 Report Posted January 8, 2017 If you'd truly like to see how more experienced pattern makers would handle different things, and you are just trying to learn and practice, my suggestion would be to look in 'Pattern Requests'. Find a request that several people have done. Then you try it. See how each person handled the different problems. There are tough ones, and there are easy ones. It is a good place to start IMO. Russell That is a great idea..Then I could compare after I finish one and see what i COULD have maybe done, to improve my end results.. I think I will give that a try. I also want to do original pattern making things to see if I really have any hitting creativity in this old body, or not. And Lawson... thanks for your efforts..I like how it came out..I copied yours and will try to clean it up into a cuttable pattern for myself . I just mean by that statement that I am going to take out the noise in the pattern and see how it comes out, using your shadow features. I appreciate your help Dick heppnerguy lawson56 1 Quote
