kmmcrafts Posted January 17, 2017 Report Posted January 17, 2017 I have an image that I am trying to make a desk clock out of.. when I import the image all is fine.. do up the changes I want an looks good on my screen.. when I save it.. or print it.. it only shows the paper size of the imported image.. my work i added to the image gets cut off since I made a rectangle to make it longer and added a circle for where the clock will go.. anything that goes out beyond the imported image size prints out black.. I am sure it has to be something in the back ground settings but not sure how to fix that.. Also like to know how to add a + to the center of my circle where I would need to drill the clock.. but that isn't my issue and I've been doing these without the + for a long time.. but if it's easy then I will give it a try. Thanks for any help, Kevin Quote
Fab4 Posted January 17, 2017 Report Posted January 17, 2017 Hi kevin: Sounds like you are working outside the box I call it the canvas When you first go into inkscape resize the canvas just a tad larger than your rectangle - You may have to use the custom size When you finish your design and ready to save make sure you are inside the canvas then try it again Hope this makes sense to you and you get what you're after for the plus sign inside the circle Grab the bezier tool and make a horizontal and a vertical line the select both and go to align and distribute - this will give you your plus sign then place the plus sign inside the circle and align and distribute again you will have your center Fab4 Birchbark and bobscroll 2 Quote
heppnerguy Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 also I might add that you need to make your Inkscape to the 8 1/2 X 11 inch. In case you do not know how to do that you need to click on 'file' on the extreme upper left of the page and scroll down to the ' document properties and click on that. This will open another window. About midway on the screen you will see the size you want..click on it and go to the right upper side and you will see 'Ddfault units' with a down arrow and a 'px' next to the down arrow.. Click the down arrow and you will see 'in' standing for inches.....click on it. After that you need to go straight down to the 'units' and change the 'px; there also to 'in'. Then you can go to the bottom left and close this window.. Now your box will represent the same size as your normal American note book paper. What ever you want printed needs to be totally within the box as Fab4 explains above Dick heppnerguy Quote
Fab4 Posted January 18, 2017 Report Posted January 18, 2017 (edited) Thanks guys for liking my reply and Dick for adding to it BUT... I read Kevin's post wrong Printing the background black is the issue here What's happening here is when he prints, the background comes out all black You do not want to print too many copies like this - talk about wasting your ink I think Kevin is on the right track with the settings but exactly how to change it is the question - Has anyone gone through this, if so, what was the fix Windows 10 is his operating system What I did reply is true but did nothing to help Kevin out Thanks Fab4 Edited January 18, 2017 by Fab4 Quote
Travis Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 Can you post your Inkscape file? Maybe we can take a look at it and see if there's anything out of place. Quote
jollyred Posted January 19, 2017 Report Posted January 19, 2017 i had this problem when printing to pdf, and found a fix in a forum at the Inkscape site. When you go to the printer, the print dialog box will appear, at the top of which is two tabs. One of these is "rendering", open that tab. Here you change from "vector" to "raster", and set the print to about 300 dpi. Then send to the printer and see if it helps you. Quote
kmmcrafts Posted January 19, 2017 Author Report Posted January 19, 2017 Thanks everyone for the suggestions.. I've actually been quite busy so I haven't had time to mess around with it yet.. I had been using inkscape on and off for quite a while.. while I am used to using corel draw.. my version is a old version and when i upgraded to windows 10 corel crashed my computer.. rather than buy a newer version of corel I was trying to get by with inkscape.. I had not really had much issues with inkscape until.. I tried to do a grey color tone bucket fill into some text I had.. since I didn't know how to really do that in inkscape.. I started just pushing some buttons seeing what does what and so on trying to figure out how to do the color fill.. needless to say I didn't figure it out, LOL Now this was a couple months ago.. didn't think a lot about it.. Now I am wondering if I had messed up something in my inkscape settings.. Funny thing is though.. its printing correct within the image size that I import into inkscape.. but since I was making a desk clock pattern from a image.. I added a rectangle and extended it out beyond the imported image... but within my canvas size.. then I added my circle where the clock would go.. got everything looking good exported my pattern.. went to my exported file to print the pattern and anything that was beyond my imported image size was black while anything within my imported image showed normal.. I thought maybe I would try to print it to see what happens.. prints just like I see it in my picture once I opened the file.. But looking at the icon in my pictures it looks as it should.. Hope I am not loosing you all, LOL Anyway.. I couldn't get it to print correctly.. had a idea about printing it as a photo would.. sometimes to resize a pattern I will print as a photo.. Like This... I right click on the icon and select print.. that brings up a photo printing page where I can select 8.5 x 11, 8 x 10, 5 x 7 Etc.. at the bottom I check the box to shrink to fit ot something like that.. then print.. the pattern came out fine like that.. so now I am confused as to whether its actually a inkscape issue or a setting on my computer.. I am not sure what program is opening when I open a file.. it might be a setting here.. it's the picture program that came in windows 10.. where you can edit the pictures crop etc.. or print the pictures.. I am thinking more along the lines of this program being the issue since I can see the correct image in my files icon.. and I can print it correctly with photo printing.. Thanks again for all the help and suggestions.. I just don't make a lot of patterns myself and it seems as though every time I need to I have to relearn the software again, LOL Took me several years to finally get the hang of corel.. then by the time I did it was outdated, LOL, Kevin Quote
