wow  things are moving along quickly. I can not believe how much you have  gotten done since you first posted.. It will be magnificent. I hope you have thought about having an opening big enough to get the finished piece in it's rightful place.. You know. like building a boat in the basement.. and no that has  never happened to me...............................................................yet

dick, I can relate to that. I built this computer desk and hutch for myself about 7 years ago. the door from my shop to house was a 38" door, so I made the top 37" wide.

then someone saw the desk and hutch and wanted me to build one for them.

got r done and went to deliver. widest door on her house was 34". DOH!  I peeled the casing off and even if I took the frame out It wouldn't fit.

I can only imagine the look on the neighbors' faces as we removed a living room window that it would fit through.

the shop is wormin up and imam gonna go see how my back likes some scrolling today

workin on the front door today. theres 2 doors on the 2nd floor that are almost identical, which the pattern for those are in one of the pictures. i figured i can stack all 3, cut out all but one side of the door, then remove the 2 for the second floor and finish cutting the 1st floor door. then i just have to cut the 2nd floor doors to size.

im gonna switch gears a bit here and start framing on the 1st floor. i have all of the walls cut and theres quite a bit of work in the floor itself,so im going to spend saturday working on that.

gotta take tomorrow off from workin on this as fridays i get to watch my lil buddy in my avatar.

Hi tomsteve,

I notice in the second picture you have cut out the design. Did you make a copy of the plans and use that to cut out the designs ?

take care

wellll, i managed to get out and do some work this evening. 1st thing: decide what i want to use for flooring. just a few different choices, lictured in one photo. ended up with some padauk inlays with bubinga flooring. beings how the flooring planks would be thin,i decided to skip making the flooring tongue and groove. :)

so now i have to spend some time scrolling the entrance sides and doors themselves, which reminds me i have to get some door hardware. i wonder iffen i can find reeeeeaaalllly small deadbolts. :)

but thats tomorrows work. tonight, since im feelin like workin late, im going to make the back wall for the 1st floor, which im thinkin of adding a fireplace surround a d maybe even a picture frame for above the fireplace. which means i should prolly spend some time cleaning up this shop-in-a-mess and put some stuff away.

ijust dont understand it- i put an add in the paper lookin for some help-an apprentice. i was even offering the benefit of free reign over the radio and even a PBJ for lunch, but no one has responded!

maybe i shoulda offered some wages,too! :)

so, the front door on the 1st floor requires a 7" wide piece. i buy my lumber in 3/4" thickness, then rip in half kn the table saw and plane to thickness. however, i can only get 6" wide full cut on the table saw. soooo, what to do. welp, rip the lumber, then see how a sawzall does completing the cut. seemed to work pretty good.

i noticed on the 2nd floor there are 2 doors that are just about the same as the 1st floor door, just one side of the door not used, so im going to stack cut those 3. cut out everything on the right side and the door itself, then remove 2 and finish up the 1st floor door.

Wow,

Very resourceful. I am assuming you will plane both pieces after splitting the thickness in half?

Great work. Very inspiring.

Thank you for sharing your progress

has myself a great thought today:

so, I was getting a little unmotivated actually. was going to not do anything for a few days. but then thought,"hhhmmm, whats keeping me from skipping the 2nd floor work and working on the 3rd and 4th floor? that's what ive been wanting to get working on as theres some real challenges there. and when I get the 3rd anf 4th floor done, ill have to get the 2nd floor done."

so, im heading out for a couple hours this evening. the 3rd floor really doesn't have much on it, so I think I should be able to kick that out rather quickly.

we shall see,though!

oh,scrappile, if ya actually saw a video of a day in my shop that was sped up, youd see I relax and usually quite often! :)

welp, i didnt get as much accomplished as i thought i would last night. got the false plates and 9 wall sections for the 3rd floor cut pretty quick, but then the window trim pieces-i thought what i had was redheart, but turns out its bloodwood. its extremely dense and dulls blades quick.i thought i could stack cut 3 at a time, but the first 3 took me 2 hours to cut out those little 2" diameter trim pieces. so im going to try cutting 2 at a time. theres a couple more purdy trim pieces that go on this floor, but not sure if im going to use the bloodwood for it.

at the top in the picture is my wixey gage. makes setting the angle for bevel cuts on the table saw a breeze

I am really enjoying watching your project develope. You are doing a really admirable job. Your cutting skills are obviously well honed but above all that, thought and creativitie in choosing the woods stands out very high in my mind. I have also cut some fret clocks with a couple of thousand holes, but never have I made mine stand out with the different woods that makes yours a one of a kind and a tryue piece of art. Your clock and the dedication you are showing in making this clock has inspired me to think over my next big project and try to make it a piece of art instead of a well cut fret piece, period!

Thanks to you, I Will Improve my efforts.

i didnt get much done yesterday, other than finshing cutting out the 3rd floor window trim. stacking only 2 made the process a little quicker cutting the bloodwood, but it was still quite tedius and time consuming. im going to make parts of the purdy trim on the 3rd floor from bloodwood and put the rest of the bloodwood on the shelf. as of now, my plan is using padauk for detailwork on the floor above this. thats lumber is beautiful and easy to cut.

todays task is to get the other trim purdies for the 3rd floor cut. i noticed in pictures of the dome clock that when the same wood was used for the purdy trim pieces, they kind of blended in with the rest, so im going to see how cedar will look. once cedar gets tbe finish on it, it should darken it up a bit to help it stand out.

oh, and decided to add some oak flooring up there, too!

completed construction of the 3rd floor today.

something i want to point out on the print for the walls of the 3rd floor:

the print says 20 degree bevel both sides-picture included of the print. however, tbe walls require a 10 degree bevel both sides to equal a total of 20 degrees when 2 sections are glued together. 8 joints at 20 degrees, plus 2- 10 degrees both ends= 180 degrees.

welp, i made plans, but the plans changed!i was laying out the parts for the 4th floor-the dome- andwas going to use some padauk for parts of the construction. unfortunatly, i dont have enough to complete the parts. i dont want to start cutting the parts with the padauk i have and find out the wood i ordered to finish ks a different shade/color, so im going to wait to start that until the padauk i orderdd gets here. in the meantime, im heading down to the 2nd floor and maybe get that done this weekend. i have all the parts ready for scrolling and have the 2 doors already cut out(except for the doors themselves) and if all goes well, should have the 2nd floor done sunday.

we shall see!
