Greetings,

If you look at some of the patterns by famous designers like Judy Gale Roberts and

Kathy Wise, you will get an idea of what is involved in making an intarsia pattern,

You can also look at stained glass patterns as a good example and many stained glass

patterns are ready to use for intarsia just as they are.

Good luck and God Bless! Spirithorse

a quick and easy way to make a Intarsia/Segmentation pattern is to take a photo of your subject ie a motorcycle and then using tracing paper trace the design so you are left with a line drawing of the bike......then you can simplify it by remove some of the lines to leave larger pieces or leave it as it is and then make a copy of it with a scanner/photocopier and print a few copies. Then you just stick it on your chosen wood and basically cut along all the black lines once cut out you can remove and replace certain pieces with different woods and grain direction and finally shape/sand/finish as usual.

Its not the best way but it works and you can make a pattern from any of your own photos.

Cheers

Brian

ps My Motorcycle Intarsias are made this way to give you an idea, they are all around 24" x 20" x 1 1/2" wood and contain anything from 100 to 300 pieces!  it doesn't really matter how many pieces it just takes a little longer to finish.

Hope this helps

@angeleyes3853 - I see you are in TN - now I know that covers a wide path - BUT if you are anywhere near Judy Gale Robert's Studio in Seymour, TN just outside Knoxville on the way to Sevierville - and you have never been to her studio - I highly encourage you to go and visit her studio. Not only can you see all of her awesome work, up close and in person, which will let you get an idea of how the "patterns" work - she is always willing to help people out and talk about her work, how she does it, etc.  (I am in the Knoxville area myself and took two of her classes last year.  Waited too long to get into one this year but am on a wait list for Oct. If you are in this area let me know. :))

Thanks Don for sharing that link - I will check it out as I don't recall seeing those.

Brian - Claymore - gave a great basic info. on how to start to do a pattern.  Thanks for sharing that Brian.  I am off to check out your gallery and to see some more of your work after seeing the one in your Intro thread - I can't wait to see more of it.
