Hi Everyone. I am new to the world of Scroll Sawing but have been doing woodwork for about 10 yrs. I have been glueing my Patterns directly to the wood surface but have had trouble with the pattern coming loose during the cutting process. I have just purchased 3M 77 and am going to give it try to see if it holds better. I just want to know how many of you use a substrait under your Patterns and what you use. Any help would be appreciated.

I use 3M 77. It works great. Spray a light mist to the back of the pattern only. Let is set for about 30 seconds then apply to the wood. Some folks use blue painters tape on the wood first then the pattern. I don't like having to scrape off all the little pieces of the blue tape, so I don't use it. I apply clear packing tape on top of the pattern to lubricate the blade. Afterwords I use either a heat gun or a spritz of mineral spirits to remove the pattern.

welcome to the Village by the way!

Welcome to the Village,

I use the method dgman mentioned with the blue painter's tape and then

the 3m glue on the back of the pattern. If you pattern is coming off during the

cutting process you may be using too much glue. It only takes a light, even coating

but let it set up until it is tacky before applying it to your painters tape or wood.

God Bless! Spirithorse

DGMAN: I tried using the packing tape over the Pattern but did not like the results, the glare off the tape was giving me fits trying to stay in the line, also it seemed to gum up on top of my project and my blade. Also the Pattern lifted up with the tape anyway. I purchased the 3m77 and I will give it a try.  I may also try the blue Tape.

Thanks everyone for the Advise.

I don't have an issue with glare as I use a magnifier lamp with a florecent bulb. The florecent light does not glare off the tape.

You have to make sure the tape is tight against the pattern without any air bubbles. After applying a single layer of tape ( don't wrap), I burnish the tape with a small block of wood. This ensures wood dust doesn't accumulate between the tape and pattern..

i just can't stand having to scrape off all those little bits of blue tape!

dgman: I just re-did my Pattern using Blue Painters Tape and the 3m77 and Burnished it down to the tap and it worked great! I did have a few area's where I had to use my knife to get the tape off but not very many places. If that's all I have in the future I will continue to use it.

Thanks for the Advice.
