For a long time I have wanted a drum sander type sander.  I have a jointer that for some reason is one power tool that scares me to death.  I only have used it when I could not figure another way of doing what they do.   I have been reading the a SandFlee or FlatMaster type drum sander can accomplish a lot of what I tried to do on a Jointer.  Like remove the cup, flatten smaller boards. Plus they work good or are suppose to on lots of scrolling projects.  In my reading I discovered that Flat Master has a kit to build one that really looks like an easy straight forward build to me.  I an seriously giving thought to getting the kit.  I plan on selling my jointer, whether I build the kit or not.  I just do not like using it so it sits and takes up room.  I guess what solidified  my fear of jointer was when I was at a yard sale, got talking to a guy about wood working and he held up his left hand... or what remained of it,,  a thumb and the palm, no fingers!!  He said a slight mistake while using his jointer!

Paul, I own one, it does a nice job of sanding. I'm not to sure I'd want to use it to take a cup out of a board, especially, if it was much of a cup. I suppose you could use a coarser sandpaper then I use, it just would take a fair amount of time IMO.

I fear machines that don't care what they cut!

I have a RIGID oscillating belt/spindle sander that is the 2nd most used tool in the shop. I occasionally throw a 80 grit belt on it if I have a lot of stock to remove quickly while shapiing, and I have to tell ya, that 80 grit belt is scary!! I now wear gloves whenever I use that belt, don't ask me why!! :):):)
