jerry1939 Posted August 7, 2017 Report Posted August 7, 2017 My Wife & I own a condo in a 12 unit building. A nurse that also lives in the building is only so-so friendly. Met her and the significant other outside yesterday and she was suddenly very pleasant. Turns out her sister is getting married in a month and she REALLY would like to give her a forest wren bowl like the one she saw on our Facebook page. I told her that I don't sell any of my work. "How about if I commission you to make one". (Don't ask me what the heck would be the difference). All you Nice People that sell your work already knew full well that a large number of "buyers" have no idea of how much is involved. I told her, "I certainly am not going to say that you cannot afford one, but I will say that anyone would be foolish to spend that kind of money". I went on to explain all that is involved, and therefore what just the long side of the bowl (the wren) would cost, at minimum wage. They suddenly remembered that they were heading out to brunch. We found it humorous. jerry jollyred, 125 CSL, danny and 4 others 7 Quote

dansnow Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 I have a pull toy dragon design that I've made a few of. It's labor intensive, contains something like 46 pieces so I know even at what I charge I'm not making more than a few dollars on it. So I had decided I didn't want to make any more for a while, and of course the next week I was asked if I would make one. Hoping they would go away I added $50 to the price I usually charge. They agreed instantly and I was stuck, had to make "one more". In keeping with the thread, I have had many show great interest until they see/hear the price and suddenly they remember they need to be else where but "they will be back!" danny 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 (edited) You never know. Some people are willing to pay a good price. Jerry, what wood is you beautiful bowl made out of? Looks like it could be oak. I have sent and email to you. Edited August 12, 2017 by Scrappile Quote
oldhudson Posted August 12, 2017 Report Posted August 12, 2017 There's a complete lack of knowledge, with many people, about what goes into fine craft work. I'm no longer surprised when I price a project and the customer retreats. Quote

wombatie Posted August 13, 2017 Report Posted August 13, 2017 Some people want something for next to nothing. Funny that. Marg Quote
Woodmaster1 Posted August 13, 2017 Report Posted August 13, 2017 (edited) Your bowl is fantastic it should not be sold for less than what you value it. People need to realize the time and effort needed to produce something that beautiful. Edited August 13, 2017 by Woodmaster1 Quote
Chiloquinruss Posted August 14, 2017 Report Posted August 14, 2017 How I finally retired! When I quit working for a wage I started consulting for a fee. When I finally decided I didn't want to do that any more, but didn't want to alert my significant other, I kept raising my hourly rate. FINALLY the work 'dried up' and so I retired! Worked for me! Creative pricing I think it's called. Russ Quote
