Phantom Scroller Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 Hi All. I've made a few signs in my life but never with a router this is the first one ever and I would love the critics to say their peace because without it how can I get better at it.I know practice makes perfect but advice is also good. I found on this sign at 1/4" depth was to deep and could reduce that to make it easier to flow around and not dig in so here's a picture NO 1 cut sign.Be honest and most of all have fun with your answers. merlin Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 I take it that is free hand............If so that's pretty good......Spiral bade? Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
New Guy Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 You did very good, routers are not easy to handle. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
oldhudson Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 I think it came out great. The freehand lettering is first rate. The use of natural edge stock seems to fit perfectly with the 'dream' concept. Was this a gift, commission or are you just playing around with the router? The only way to improve it would be if the tail on the "M" were somewhat shorter. It would have been nice to see something in the pic to help us judge the size. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
scrollerpete Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 I don't see anything wrong with this sign, I'm sure somebody will be proud to hang it on their bedroom wall. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
spirithorse Posted October 9, 2017 Report Posted October 9, 2017 Well done, Roly, No criticism here! Thanks for sharing and God Bless! Spirithorse Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
Fish Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 It looks pretty good, I've never tried this free hand but practice will make the letters smoother. I would mess around with it to get better using waste wood though, ply wood maybe. Could you write the word and trace it with the router? amazingkevin and Phantom Scroller 2 Quote
Lucky2 Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Roly, it's a pretty good looking sign, there's only a couple of signs of studdering with the router. I think that if you practiced a bit more, you would be more happy with your work. Len Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
Rob Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Well I have never tried freehand routing but for a first attempt I would be very proud of that. As you said, a shallower cut might be easier to control so show us No2. soon! Rob Phantom Scroller 1 Quote

No it's just a practice piece I printed it onto paper then stuck it to the wood and followed the letters but I need to be a bit shallower with the 60 deg bit so it runs smoother I then sprayed blackboard paint on and sanded the top off the leave the letters black really pleased with first go onward and upward as they say. I do have a milescraft pro sign maker but I don't like the font and melted the plastic guides and had to order brass ones won't be using that in hurry again takes to much time setting up hence freehand routeing for now on for me with any font I want. Thanks All for positive feedback everyone. Roly Quote
MTCowpoke22 Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Easy to see that it's freehand, but some really like that look. I don't know that I'd have done anywhere near as well as you did. I bet once you figure out your bit and the proper depth, it'll be like second nature for you. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
jbrowning Posted October 10, 2017 Report Posted October 10, 2017 Hi Roly, how do you think that would look if you used a round over bit on the letters? Phantom Scroller 1 Quote

Falcon Posted October 14, 2017 Report Posted October 14, 2017 Looks good Roly. I use a harbor freight trim router for doing signs and pictures. Bits I use are profile bit from Dave's signs, 60 degree and 90 degree bits. I put patterns on buy printing them backwards on laser printer and using a weller transfer tip Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
