kmmcrafts Posted January 5, 2018 Report Posted January 5, 2018 So our computer components was delivered the other night so my son and I put my new computer together night before last.. then last night we fired it up and installed windows 10 pro. and started the set up process.. played around on this a little last night.. and been using it today.. Wow, what a headache it is to install all the software, and drivers etc.. went to print my shipping labels for the orders I'm mailing out today and woops.. no printer driver.. seems like everything I do or try to do.. woops gotta do this first.. You forget how much you rely on certain things you have installed on a computer that you had been running for 8 years until you start over fresh.. Had to make a custom pattern this morning.. woops better install inkscape and gimp etc.. I have a lot of templates for custom / personalized patterns that I make.. but all those files are on the old computer, LOL Taking me a bit to get used to a desktop.. too.. as I've used nothing but a 15.6" laptop or a 10" mini laptop since 2006.. my monitor is a 22" 1080P .. I feel like I'm inches from a big screen TV or something LOL.. May have to just mount this on the wall behind my desk..LOL Oh well I'll get it squared away after a few weeks I suppose.. just glad I didn't do this during a real busy time of the year.. Now tonight we will be building my sons new gaming PC.. OCtoolguy and Fab4 1 1 Quote

XP was one of their better systems.. in my opinion.. however I have not had any issues with 10 either other than older software will clash with the system and crash it.. which is why I no longer use Corel Draw.. Not paying the big money for the latest copy when inkscape and others are free and do what I need.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

My oldest son is not into electronics at all.. but his work requires him to have a laptop.. yet doesn't need it only about once or twice a year.. he gets mad every time he fires the thing up as he can't do anything on it until it updates LOL.. If it were up to him all electronics would go into the garbage... doesn't like anything but the radio.. that one he would keep.. JTTHECLOCKMAN and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

Kevin, have you thought about taking the hard drive out of your old machine and putting it in the new one just as a place to keep all your files, pics, music etc.? I have two drives on my computer and all the programs are on the C drive and all other stuff is on the D drive. If you have a lot of stuff on the old drive, just put it in the new machine so you can access that info and not have to redo everything. Ray Quote

I have had no problem with Windows 10 that wasn't self inflicted. It's really a great OS. I used to think Windows 7 was better but now that I have 10 on my computer and have to give aid to my wife on her laptop that is running 7, I can sure see the differences. Just being able to tag and manipulate multiple files at one time is one of the things I like. Ray Quote

I hope you didn't put Win 10 on an older machine. It requires a lot of resources that most older machines can't handle and will either be deathly slow or die trying to process something. Ray Quote

I still plan to use the old computer and it's a laptop.. I use it for when on Vacation as it's a little more portable Hahaha.. I have a external drive that I use and think I will just copy the files to that.. since it will be plugged into the new desktop for back-ups etc.. I back up all my important stuff.. a few times.. as in external drive.. zip drive.. and burn a disc, LOL since it's not like storing a set of encyclopedias in a book case LOL.. lost a external drive a few years ago.. and learned to do more than just one back-up.. maybe a little over board now.. Well, that sounds good. You could still use the drive out of your laptop and just put another drive in. All you need is an enclosure for the drive and use it externally. Any way, it was just a suggestion. I have no idea how much scroll saw data stored on the laptop. I've got 6 old laptops in my closet just waiting for me to find a use for them. I can't bring myself to get rid of them. kmmcrafts 1 Quote
Sparkey Posted January 8, 2018 Report Posted January 8, 2018 I remember the old days when you installed Windows on a new system it would find and install the drivers. The last time I formatted a hard drive and installed Windows I had to go through and install every driver myself. Now when you buy a new computer they don't give you a copy of windows any more. Quote
