I watch a lot of turning videos on youtube. Carl Jacobson said in a video that he cuts the heart out of a log and paints the ends with basic paint and gets no cracking. I figured since I bought a new bandsaw I would give it a try. I made a jig to hold the log and made some bowl blanks fast and easy. They should finish out to a 9 inch to 10 inch bowl.

Rusty, I've done this with my blanks, and none of them cracked. The wood I painted the ends on was quite green, it had only been cut the previous day. It was maple wood, and I still have some of it left. I had read about using latex paint to do this with, on one of the woodturning sites I'm a member on. I had nothing else to use to prevent cracking, so I decided to use the latex paint. I was very surprised that it worked as well as it did, not one blank that I used the paint on has cracked.
