Hawk Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I'm currently working on "Little Buddy" by Bruce Worthington. My question is should I cut out all of the pieces before shaping and sanding or when I get one section, in this case his overalls, sand and shape that before continuing with other areas? Chris Quote
spirithorse Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I personally prefer to cut the entire pattern and then shape and possibly shim areas as I assemble the pattern. God Bless! Spirithorse Jim Finn 1 Quote

Dan Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I agree, cut all first then shape. Jim Finn 1 Quote
Chunkthekid Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 Cut first. The shaping will go much easier if the whole project is cut and ready. Jim Finn 1 Quote
Hawk Posted February 22, 2018 Author Report Posted February 22, 2018 Thanks guys, that was my thinking too but I just needed to confirm that. This is to date the largest intarsia piece I've taken on. So far I've only had to recut 2 pieces to get a good fit. Something I've learned so far is the width of the line makes a HUGE difference in fit.... Chris Quote
meflick Posted February 22, 2018 Report Posted February 22, 2018 I have taken two classes from Judy Gale Roberts. She has you cut all the pieces first and then do the sanding. Some pieces can be sanded together by using a "sanding shim". You can find more info. on this on her site here: https://intarsia.com/blogs/news/using-sanding-shims She also has some other articles and tips on her site there as well. tgiro 1 Quote
Bpardue Posted February 23, 2018 Report Posted February 23, 2018 Cut everything first, Than step back and look at the piece to see what would be closest to you if it was real life. Now raise & lower pieces accordingly. Than start shaping with the thinnest pieces and work towards the thicker pieces tgiro 1 Quote
