Popular Post Oldmansbike Posted March 26, 2018 Popular Post Report Posted March 26, 2018 I spent the winter remodeling our house. New carpet, 900 sq ft of laminate flooring, made all the trim for the living room an kitchen. When it came time for new countertops in the kitchen we priced new ones and was shocked on how much the cost. So the wife said couldn't you make them out of wood. So I thought I would give it a try. Here is the finished product. I did the easy counter first. I'm working on the hard one now the countertop with the sink in it. I made it out of cherry. My wife really likes it. I think it turned out pretty good I just hope it lasts. Falcon, jollyred, new2woodwrk and 8 others 11 Quote
Dan Posted March 26, 2018 Report Posted March 26, 2018 Beautiful! To show your wife how much you love her suggestion buy her a couple of gallons of paste wax. keefie 1 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 That one nice counter top! What kind of finish did you use and how many coats? Thanks for sharing Quote
Oldmansbike Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 I used 3 coats of spar urethane. So far it's holding up good. amazingkevin 1 Quote
oldhudson Posted March 27, 2018 Report Posted March 27, 2018 They look super and I have great admiration for someone who takes on a remodeling the kitchen project. That is serious DIY stuff. Did you make your cabinets too? I sure hope the counter tops last. I think they will but suspect they will need on-going maintenance. Still they will be unique. Of the materials used today for counter tops I think wood is the rarest. We went with Cambria. Expensive, bloody right it was. But, six years in (in a heavily used kitchen) and they look exactly like the day they were installed. In our remodel we decided to no purchase any new appliances and that's how we paid for the counter tops. I can think of nothing in the woodworking world that's more rewarding than a kitchen remodel. Great job! RabidAlien 1 Quote

Oldmansbike Posted March 27, 2018 Author Report Posted March 27, 2018 Thanks for all the compliments. Those are the old cabinets. They still looked good and were in good shape for being 35 years old. Quote

Oldmansbike Posted April 10, 2018 Author Report Posted April 10, 2018 I got the other section of countertop installed this weekend even splurged for a new sink and faucet. They turned out pretty good. Only 2 or 3 more coats of finish and I'm done. meflick 1 Quote
