savethebeer Posted April 18, 2018 Report Posted April 18, 2018 Just made my first bandsaw box. Found it very easy and fun. Have to figure out the finish now. Its made from pine. I got 3 identical blocks cheap so that was why pine. What is the biggest blade you all use. I got a large saw so as to retire the little bandsaw but discovered today that I was not able to make sharpish turns on the big saw and discovered the little saw was big and strong enough to make boxes after all. I found the bigger blade was brilliant for straight cuts (back side of box. Etc) Just not agile enough for the drawer cutting. Bob new2woodwrk and Sambo19 2 Quote

Dan Posted April 18, 2018 Report Posted April 18, 2018 Well Bob, the largest blade I've used was a 1/4" (7 mm) and the smallest was 1/8" (3 mm). Now, let's talk about those pictures... jollyred and Phantom Scroller 2 Quote

I'd like to do one of those someday but I have one of those 9" crappy skil bandsaws and not very good with it all :( I love the wood choice - thanks for sharing Quote

justdraftn Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 Nice. I like letting the "flaws" in the wood be the focal point. Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 Looks good and I am sure they will get even better the more you do. If I may make a suggestion, try to make your entry cut always with the grain if possible. It makes it alot easier to hide than across grain. Many ideas with these type boxes and as always the mind is your limit. Thanks for showing. Dan 1 Quote
Phantom Scroller Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 Neat box love the grain on draw. Roly Quote
Dan Posted April 19, 2018 Report Posted April 19, 2018 I also like the surprises in cutting wood. It adds a lot of character. At first glance it looks like a whale. You need to put a small Jonah in the drawer. Quote
oldhudson Posted April 21, 2018 Report Posted April 21, 2018 Here's the rule for bandsaw blades sizes and the minimum radius they can cut - or at least this is the one I follow: 1/8" blade = 1/4" radius 3/16" blade = 1/2" radius 1/4" blade = 3/4: radius 3/8" blade = 1" radius 1/2" blade = 1 1/4" radius Hope this helps. savethebeer Posted April 21, 2018 Author Report Posted April 21, 2018 Thanks for those tips about grain and blade turning circles. I bought 3 blocks and that'll do me and boxes for the moment. Here is the 3 of them. I will stain and polish them. Have to make handles still. Bob Scrolling Steve, Fab4 and Sambo19 3 Quote

Woodmaster1 Posted April 28, 2018 Report Posted April 28, 2018 Nice boxes, I use an 1/8" blade with a Carter stabizer. I find the stabilizer works awesome. I have a second bandsaw for the resawing with a 3/4" carbide blade. multitom 1 Quote
Rockytime Posted April 28, 2018 Report Posted April 28, 2018 Those are beautiful boxes. Wonder if my old 12" Craftsman would work well enough to do it? Quote
savethebeer Posted May 10, 2018 Author Report Posted May 10, 2018 I coated the 3 boxes in BLO and was delighted how the grain was enhanced. I've spent some time slicing dried tree branches on the bandsaw with a view to making Xmas decorations with live wood. All the slices seem very dry but I'll be leaving them until Aug or Sept before I start using them anyway. I then decided to try making a box from a chunk of branch. Everything was fine taking a sliver off the bottom and also taking the back off, the trouble started when I tried cutting the box. I got around the first two corners and now the blade is stuck. I cant go forward or back. I thing the wood might be still damp. There is no sap on the blade so I don't think its that. Bob Sambo19 1 Quote
