Scrappile Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 (edited) Some may know this but others may not... I thought of it because our new dog, is going through a very stressful period, being taken for his family and put in a new home. One of the consequences have been bad case of diarrhea, even though we have not changed his diet. One of the best things to give a dog with diarrhea or constipation, either one, is a couple spoons full of canned pumpkin right out of the can. Depend on the size of the dog, one may be enough for a small breed. It really helps even things out whichever extreme the dog is experiencing, seriously. If it doesn't help in a day or two then see a vet of coarse. We gave Ali some last evening and this morning and we are already seeing improvement. We learned if from our daughter and our son-in-law who use to be vet techs. Edited June 19, 2018 by Scrappile jollyred and RabidAlien 1 1 Quote
WayneMahler Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 Great information. We always found out what they were used to eating and then weaned them to what we had. Never knew about this. Thanks for a great post of information. Quote
dansnow Posted June 19, 2018 Report Posted June 19, 2018 We take the canned pure pumpkin (check that it isn't the sweetened pie filling) and put it in tablespoon sized portions on a sheet tray and freeze them. When frozen throw them in a zip;ock bag. Then they are ready as a frozen treat, or 25 seconds in a microwave will thaw them out. Scrappile 1 Quote
spirithorse Posted June 20, 2018 Report Posted June 20, 2018 Thanks for the info, Paul! I hope I'll never need that remedy for our new puppy but, it' simple enough for an old man like me to remember and easy enough to administer. God Bless! Spirithorse Quote
Scrappile Posted June 20, 2018 Author Report Posted June 20, 2018 (edited) I found this on the internet about it... Interesting, now I want to know if it does the same for human... I'd hate to be force to eat pumpkin pie year round instead of just Thanksgiving.... https://www.dogids.com/blog/pumpkin-for-dogs/ Hummmm may be forced to eat more pumpkin!! http://healthyeating.sfgate.com/health-benefits-eating-pumpkin-puree-4645.html My wife has a neat recipe from her mother. Bakes a casserole in a pumpkin. It has hamburger and all sorts of other things in it and you eat the pumpkin flesh also. I love it. Edited June 20, 2018 by Scrappile RabidAlien 1 Quote
RabidAlien Posted June 20, 2018 Report Posted June 20, 2018 We've done this a time or two for our dogs, when they get backed up...or won't stop. Either way, pumpkin seems to take what's off-kilter, whichever direction, and even it out. Good stuff! ....may need to look into pumpkin more, after reading those links. You wouldn't happen to have that recipe on hand, would you? Quote
MrsN Posted June 20, 2018 Report Posted June 20, 2018 Thanks for the reminder. I used this once with success but hadn't thought of in. I like the frozen treat idea. Quote
Scrappile Posted June 20, 2018 Author Report Posted June 20, 2018 I was telling my wife about the frozen treat thing this morning and my wife said why not just fill up an ice cube tray with it... might be a good idea. I'd hate to get confused and add pumpkin to my Scotch though.... Dave Monk and meflick 2 Quote
dansnow Posted June 20, 2018 Report Posted June 20, 2018 We have a tablespoon sized ice cream scoop we use to dole the pumpkin onto a silicon baking mat on a half sheet pan and then toss that into the freezer. Quote
