I have spent the last 6 months building a Maloof style rocker.  It has been a very big challenge and I have spent several hundred hours on it.  I finally have it together, shaped and sanded.  One of the most difficult tasks was putting the rockers on the chair and getting the right balance point and one that my wife approved.

The finish is Teak Oil on the Claro Walnut.  I have several coats on with light sanding or steel wool.  Then, will be several coats of wipe on poly and last a finishing wax.  I need to be patient between coats to let things dry properly.

Well that's a serious project. There's all the shaping of the parts, all the cutting/fitting of the mortise and tenon joints, plus serious finishing. It's a job and when it's new - Wow. Congrats on taking on an heirloom project and seeing it through. How'd it feel sitting in it?

I noticed the top rail and spindles have different look - what's up?  Is that s ShopSmith sitting in the back round?

All of the wood is Claro Walnut and just different colors.  The head rest was chosen for the interesting grain.  The back slats had to be made out of straight grained wood.  The joints are not mortise and tenon.  The leg to seat joints are a special joint used in Maloof rockers.  The rest of the joints are dowels with everything glued with epoxy.  The rockers are laminated design. The chair is very comfortable to sit in as the seat, arms, and back slats are all contoured to fit.  I took a one week class to learn about building it and then my instructor has answered question via email.

Yes, it is Shopsmith and I use it as a lathe, horizontal drill press, and various sander.  I had the head rebuilt this last summer and operates perfectly.  It is a great auxiliary tool and can do so many things.
