Ken O Posted November 13, 2010 Report Posted November 13, 2010 We had our annual Pumpkin Derby this year at work on Halloween. The pumpkins were about 16-17lbs. There were 9 teams split up evenly in the company, mostly by department, so some teams had all engineers, some computer progrogramers, etc. But all came up with very good ideas and all were very fast. Last year my team won and I was looking foreward to defending our title. My team was "The Ennunciator" styled after the old race car our company used to sponsor. My wifes team was "Baby Hannibal". One of our computer guys did the video. Next year we'll have to get a camera on the stopping area, aka: "Crash Central" There were some good whipeouts off camera. I won't give away the end except that it was a photo finish and took 10 min to figure out who won. Enjoy Ken http://www.metacafe.com/watch/5453569/2 ... kin_derby/ Quote

Ken O Posted November 13, 2010 Author Report Posted November 13, 2010 You couldn't see most of the crowd, they were kinda behind the camera. Just like last years race the top 3 all had some kind of roller bumpers in front in case they got too close to the side. There were a couple that were clearly faster but bumped the side and lost a lot of speed because they had no side bumpers. Most of the problem was keeping the pumpkins attached after they hit the hay bales at the bottom. Ours was a pine frame with foam hot glued to it to make the body shape and a hole carved in the middle for the pumpkin. The winner was angle iron welded together and a plywood board screwed to the bottom for the pumpkin to sit on. (My wife told me what she wanted and I welded it up. ) My team made it very clear that hers was not to be faster than ours.......whoops. So I really took 1st and 3rd. Quote
