I have an older Pentax camera that I take photos of my projects with. I ran out of sd cards and it has been awhile since I bought my last one. I am not tuned into all the stuff so thought I would ask??? I looked on line because I can not find in stores any more a 2GB SanDisk card. This is as big as my camera will accept. I see 2gb cards with a class 2 and some with a class 4. What is the difference and can either be used?? Thanks in advance.

What model camera is it?  If it'll only recognize up to a 2Gb card, it might not be able to recognize the Class 4 cards.  Frankly, though, I'm kinda surprised you were able to find 2Gb SD cards!!

I was only able to find them on line. I tried a few stores today and no luck any more. The camera is a Pentax Optio MX4. Good little camera for sure so I am not upgrading that. I use to buy those cards in sets and were inexpensive. I have transfered many photos to seperate memory sticks but I still keep photos stored on the disc and want to continue. Thus when I said I ran out I have no more spare ones. Hate to delete things because I have family photos that can not be repeated again.

Okay, you should be good with either card.  The "class" rating for an SD card is the speed at which data can be written to the card (in mbps, megabits per second).  If you're doing video, your camera will support up to 10mbps, or a class 10 card.  For photos,  class 2, 4, or 6 will work fine and you honestly won't notice much of a difference between the cards.  So as long as its no more than a 2Gb card, any will work.  So its just a matter of personal preference, whether a slightly more expensive Class4 card will make you happier or not.

I would download the files to your computer and then either burn to CD or DVD.  Or put them on a thumb drive/flash drive.

Personally, I back up all my pictures every couple of months.  I would always have at least two copies of my projects

I second backing up the images.. I lost a good bunch of pictures in the past.. I now keep on a external hard drive as well as a thumb drive, and also burn a copy to a disc.. These devices are small and fairly inexpensive... Some might laugh but.. I also keep a Thumb drive out in my shop with my images... just in case the house was to burn down.. The thing with images... once they are gone... they are gone.. Sometimes you can get lucky and have a specialist retrieve images off messed up hard drives etc.. at a very expensive cost.. Disc and thumb drives are small and easy to store.. nothing wrong with keeping several copies and several extra copies to keep in another structure if they are that important to you..

I have all my photos stored in various places both on the computer and a seperate drive and also flash drives. I just use the cards as that final backup and figured at that time the price was cheap security. I thank all that responded and I feel more up to speed on this and will buy a couple class 2 cards. Thanks again.

2Gb may be getting hard to find, as "bigger is better" is the trend in technology.  You might want to grab a bunch, if the price allows.
