Gordster Posted February 20, 2019 Report Posted February 20, 2019 Did anyone ever have one of these,or use one..I got it at the flea market for $5. Great for angles on scroll saw for inlays.once I get the angle correct, just read the reading and write it down. Quote

Fab4 Posted February 20, 2019 Report Posted February 20, 2019 Hi Gordie: Nice find The only thing I would worry about is that the calibration of this is true At the price you paid you can't go wrong either way Fab4 Gordster 1 Quote
fredfret Posted February 20, 2019 Report Posted February 20, 2019 The calibration is easy zero the unit then stand it on end it should read 90 degrees +/-0.5 degree. New price for that unit is $300. Quote

oldhudson Posted February 21, 2019 Report Posted February 21, 2019 I have the Wixey brand digital angle gauge and their 8" protractor. I find the protractor somewhat awkward to use. But they both work fine with one exception. (Both use a pancake battery and they must draw some power even when switched off because when I'd go to use them the batteries were dead. Some time ago I started removing the batteries from the units until they're needed, now they last years.) I've had them several years. I think, but I'm not sure, that most of those available now are Wixey knock-offs. I think you got a great deal, most are in that $25-$30 price range. They should be calibrated with each use. JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted February 21, 2019 Report Posted February 21, 2019 I have the Wixie also along with an angle protractor that I use on the tablesaw all the time and they work very well but agree about the battery thing. My biggest digital measuring tool is a digital calipers. Without doubt one of the best tools when doing lathe work especially pen making. have a couple of these in case one breaks or just stops working. need to take care of them though. Not a rough throwing tool. Gordster 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted February 21, 2019 Report Posted February 21, 2019 I have a couple Wixey angle gauges, one came with my Seyco. I have always removed the batteries when not in use. They will drain batteries if you don't as Oldhudson says. Quote
Bill WIlson Posted February 21, 2019 Report Posted February 21, 2019 Actually, I think Wixey made improvements to later models of their gauge, in response to complaints about batteries and battery life. I've had mine for at least 3-4 years now. It takes AAA batteries and I'm still using the original set of 3. Quote

Gordster Posted February 21, 2019 Author Report Posted February 21, 2019 I checked calibration today and it was 90.0 right on.didn't take battery cover yet to see what it takes. Fab4 1 Quote

Yea, I remember when they first came out. Initial reviews were great, but eventually the battery life thing became an issue. There was lots of grumbling on various woodworking forums about how the batteries didn't last. I wanted one, but held off for that reason. Then I started reading reports of how Wixey solved the problem by switching to standard AAA batteries, in their newer models. In fact, I think I may have heard about it first from Rolf, over on the SSW&C forum. That was when I bought mine. Battery life has not been a problem for me. Quote

Well I use mine many times and deal with the battery thing but will start taking them out more often. There have been knock-offs to those digital things now too. Quote
Gordster Posted February 24, 2019 Author Report Posted February 24, 2019 The battery in the one I have is a 9 volt. Quote
