Recently received some hardwood planks from one of the maintenance crew where I live. He is also a Lt. on our local Fire Department. There was no charge for the wood  He asked if I could cut him one of the fire trucks in his department. I said "No problem." The pattern for the truck is almost done. I would like to go a bit extra and make him a nice plaque based on the departments emblem/patch.

The problem is I'm not sure how to go about it :? My two ideas are 1) do a segmented piece with the butting edges rounded over or 2) Do a bevel cut so that the smaller pieces are raised above the outer ring (red oak). Unfortunately my intrasia a segmented skills are poorly lacking. I'm looking for a procedure that will fit tightly and look good. I will be working with 3/4" red oak, maple and cherry. I would like to incorporate all three woods in the design. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I've included a basic picture of the emblem/patch.

Thanks!

If you want to use all 3 types. I would cut out the red oak get the shapes cutout of it and sanded, then use that as your pattern for the inside pieces. just lay over your next type of wood and trace it. or trace it on paper and apply to wood.

Great ideas...I figured I couldn't stack cut the pieces. But using the inner pieces as templates for the other woods sounds doable. That way my entry holes for the inner pieces won't be as critical since the cutouts will only be templates.
