Having just "graduated" from a JGR Beginner Intarsia Class, I plan to tackle several Intarsia projects during the next year or two and I am attempting to qualify to take Judy's Intermediate Class.

I have a good supply of Western Red Cedar and, with its many shades and patterns Western Red Cedar can be used as the majority of wood on most Intarsia.  But, other wood species can often provide interesting highlights and, to that end, I ventured to Exotic Woods in Burlington Ontario today.  For a wood lover, this place is Mecca.  I came away with what to me, right now, looks like a lifetime supply of woods of many colours.  Here is a photo:

From left to right, the wood species are:

  • Aspen
  • Chakte-kok
  • Paela
  • Paduk
  • Lacewood
  • Aromatic Cedar (3 boards)
  • Canary
  • Wenge
  • Pau Amarello
  • Paduk (again)
  • Roasted Figured Maple

Beautiful looking wood.  Enjoy your intarsia.  By the way Frank, what thickness's are the woods?

Marg

Thankyou Marg; I am certain that I will.

The thickness varies.  Most of the woods are already dressed on all sides and are 3/4 inch (19mm) thick.  The Wenege and the Roasted Maple are 1/4 inch (6mm) thick.  The Pau Amarello and the Splated Maple are both approximately one inch (25 mm)  thick.  The Pau Amarello is the only board that is undressed.

Well Frank, that's quite a collection. I'm just about out or various lumbers that I've collected over the years to use in intarsia projects. So I'm going to have to bite the bullet and do the same if I want to do some more projects. Of course that means the wife and I are going to be eating crackers and water for the next six months. Surprised you didn't grab some walnut, but a couple of those boards would be a good substitutes. Our supply of western red cedar is very sparse down here in Florida, especially with the different coloration's. Have fun making sawdust!

Here, in Ontario, Walnut is easy to get and I already have a good supply for my furniture making hobby.

Really like the blue pine. I, also root through the poplar at Home Depot. I love that most people set aside the green pieces and also the dark brown sort of streaky pieces.
