jdawg662 Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 2nd post, woohoo! I'm really not that good yet at the whole pattern making process. My friend would like me to do one of her son Ben. I'm using photoshop and would like to know if the one I started looks cuttable and what I could do to improve it. Any help is greatly appreicated!! Quote
mikesscrollsaw Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 it's not bad, looking at it really quick, I'd say that the mouth will fall out and you'll have to make some mods to the outline otherwise there isn't anything holding him into the portrait. I'm by no means an I an expert at making patterns, but I find it's always best to start with a crisp clear photo. Quote
Messman Posted February 4, 2011 Report Posted February 4, 2011 First let me tell you that you are off to a great start. Now my first suggestion would be to let the shadows help you. What I mean by that is that it looks like you either edited (erased) the shadows or you set you sliders (when you ran it through the filter) to a very light setting and then free handed the lines over what was left, or even a combination of both. I would also look at creating stron bridges. You want to create these in places where the eye will naturally fill the lines in. I do not use the same process you are using any more but I went in and followed the same basic process you are using, I did not finish the pattern but only did some of it so you could get an idea of what I am talking about. Where you see all the red arrows those are all bridges that I created with in the pattern. Now if the arros were not there pointing them out, the eye would actually, for the most part, naturally fill in those lines or make a visual connection. I hope you understand what I am trying to say here. If you have any other questions or need further explination on what I am trying to say here, please ask away. I truley hope that this helps you out. Again you are off to a great start. Quote
jdawg662 Posted February 5, 2011 Author Report Posted February 5, 2011 Ok that makes sense. Yeah, basically what I did was ran it through the photocopy filter. I was looking at other options, but this one seemed to work best for me because I was able to get the most detail out of it without having to freehand a lot of detail on my own. I will work on it again with the example you provided. Thanks again, appreciate it!! Quote
Oges Posted February 6, 2011 Report Posted February 6, 2011 I use the Poster Edges filter first, and then the Photocopy and Notepad filters when I do mine Quote
jdawg662 Posted February 9, 2011 Author Report Posted February 9, 2011 I've been working on it alittle more today before I go into work with the example provided. Here is what I have done so far. I believe that this looks to be cuttable now. But I will leave that to you experts out there. Anything I could do to improve this? All feedback is greatly appreciated!! Quote
grampa Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hi Jim, Its looking good now, great job, the only thing that I would do is where the top of his head as been cropped in the photo just make it round so it does not look so flat plus my eyes are drawn to his left shoulder make the lines a bit thinner apart from that I think its great........Paul Quote
