Hi all,

I have a project I need to get finished and shipped out to arrive for Christmas.  I used oil based spray poly.  My project is Pine, Wenge and Polar.  The first coat went on great.  Can says dry to the touch in 4 hours, hard in 12.  The Pine and Polar took about 6 hours to dry, the Wenge however is still taky after 27 hours.  I have a second coat on the Pine and Polar and that is almost dry already.  The 1 coat on the Wenge looks really good but the grain is pretty open so not sure if the coverage is 100%.  I figure I could probably get 3 coats on the Pine and Polar, but I don't think I would have time to glue the project if I put another coat on the Wenge.

Do you think 1 coat will be good enough to keep the moisture out?  Will 2 days be enough time for the glue to dry?

Thanks

I find glue dries in about an hour but it takes over night any stress on it.  You should be okay.

3 coats of poly on the pine and popular should be good.

Wenge is tough to finish.  There must be oils in the wood and so drying time is real long.  I have used wenge as accent in cutting boards and it absorbs oil really different than all other hardwoods.

If it looks good I would not want to mess with it.

I always wipe Wenge with acetone or denatured alcohol before I coat it. Then I sometimes give it a coat of thinned oil before applying any other finish. let it dry overnight with the coat of oil before applying another finish.

I think it has an oil in it that doesn't react well with some finishes.
