OCtoolguy Posted February 8, 2020 Report Posted February 8, 2020 This one looks really clean and well cared for. Not a Chinese saw. Not Canadian either but almost as good. If it were a bit closer to me, I'd be all over it. https://santabarbara.craigslist.org/tls/d/santa-barbara-excalibur-ex-16-scroll-saw/7070335422.html Quote

My car gets crap mileage so I have to figure that it would cost me another $50-75 in gas. So, I'll pass. But, it's a great deal for somebody. Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted February 8, 2020 Report Posted February 8, 2020 (edited) Ray if you bought all the saws you seen and said you would buy you could start your own ebay. $250 is an average price for 16" saw. I would not go crazy over that. Get it for $150 then you got something if that size saw does it for you. Edited February 8, 2020 by JTTHECLOCKMAN Quote

For me I also consider the time away from the shop where I could be making inventory etc.. so I don't travel too far for a saw.. an hour each way is about max for me.. and my old truck gets 8 mpg on a good day.. worse in this cold weather.. more like 6 mpg.. doesn't seem to matter if I'm hauling my travel trailer or not... doesn't change it much at all.. lol OCtoolguy 1 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted February 9, 2020 Author Report Posted February 9, 2020 I did contact the seller and verified that he still has it and that it was made in Taiwan. I asked him if his price was firm. He came back asking what I had in mind. I explained where I was and that it was about a 5 hour round trip in a car that gets lousy mileage so the most I could offer was $175. I'm waiting....... Quote
JTTHECLOCKMAN Posted February 9, 2020 Report Posted February 9, 2020 Now you are getting closer to a reasonable price that makes it worth while. I am sitting here laughing though between you and Kevin it sounds like you are at your saws 24 hours a day 7 days a week. A 5 hour trip is peanuts. one time trip and not like you do that every day. I travelled to NY every day when I was working in the city and depends on the part of NY I worked or the down times with mass transit it could take 2 hours each way every day. It was always at least an hour. Even jobs in my own state and territory could take 1 hour a day to get to. Had to make a living. I am sure there are plenty of people here that can top that. Please stop using mileage and time as an excuse. Wow. If you want the saw go for it. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

What you could do when you were younger, has nothing to do with what you can do today. Old age, and associated health issues have a way of teaching you that. A one hour trip to San Antonio make me tired, and irritable sometimes, I can't imagine how I would feel if you add California traffic too - doesn't mean I can't do it, but do I want to .. kmmcrafts Posted February 10, 2020 Report Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) Or the opposite of Jim.. taking 3 kids on a road trip.. Everyone has a different situation .. IF I only had myself to worry about then yes it's a no brainier to make a road trip... if I was retired and nothing else to do.. It has to be a heck of a deal for me to make a drive like that.. If it's a 3 hour each way drive.. .. if the saw is a $600 plus working saw for free.. then yes it's worth my time and fuel to go get it.. but not for a $200-300 saw after having to work on it etc.. is my point.. The deal has to be appealing enough for me to WANT to make the trip. Not that I can't or won't.. I take road trips all the time... but it's because I want to or it's worth it for me to do.. OCtoolguy Posted February 10, 2020 Author Report Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) I got it! And it's a gem. $200. Rainy morning traffic made it 3 hour one way but not bad. About 2.5 going home. I enjoyed it except for my wife "chirping" in my ear about it. Oh well, after 50 years I'm almost immune to it. Edited February 10, 2020 by octoolguy Dave Monk and kmmcrafts 2 Quote

Those EX saws are awesome as you already know.. Since I got my china made piece of junk working "OK" I love it.. and pretty sure in the near future I'll be springing for a new Pegas.. Getting rid of the older Hawk and possibly the EX-21 to fund the Pegas.. Love to get my hands on a good used or even a well worn EX-16.. it'd be an awesome road saw.. and about 99% of the things I made.. I don't need any bigger saw.. You gonna put the Hawk up for sale or did you already sell that one? You Do Know To Make It More User Friendly You're Gonna Need To Upgrade To The Pegas Clamps... add another $90 to it now,, LOL I'm just messing with ya.. hotshot Posted February 10, 2020 Report Posted February 10, 2020 (edited) Thing with Excaliburs, you can tell by amount of paint missing around the middle of the table how much it was used. For that price, if there is any paint at all left, I would say you got a steal. Big congrats. ------Randy Edited February 10, 2020 by hotshot OCtoolguy 1 Quote

Ok, no, I still have the Hawk but it's going up for sale just as soon as the market clears a bit around me. There are too many right now for sale. Most of them are old saws but the buyers have to be educated same as I had to be. I'm going to put it up for $600 and see where it goes. It is a mint saw though. Just like new. And, as to your second question, I've already ordered the Pegas clamp set but it will just sit for a while until I see how the stock clamps work out. The saw is amazingly smooth. The guy I bought it from didn't have a clue as to how to use it. He had a huge #12 reverse tooth blade in it and it was in upside down. I mentioned that most saws, the hold down foot was missing. He said that it would be hard to hold the wood down without it. Well, having that big of a blade in upside down, I can see why. And the reverse teeth were all at the top so that meant that he was doing all of his cutting with the down stroke teeth pointing straight up. Must have been a real bear to control. I got the factory foot switch, blades and the owner's manual with it. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

Both of my EX's have just very fine scratches in the paint. Like new. My first one, the 21 was made in Canada and this 16 came from Taiwan. kmmcrafts 1 Quote

I think he's thinking about production cutting.. set them up side by side and cut at the same time with each hand.. The Hawk cuts a little slower so he'll use a foot for that one.. 3 projects at a time.. I have no room to talk.. I'm workin on a deal now and may have 6 saws soon.. But I'm about to hire two scroll sawers so I have a reason for so many saws.. Edited February 12, 2020 by kmmcrafts OCtoolguy 1 Quote
