Dave Monk Posted August 17, 2020 Report Posted August 17, 2020 I have been using the name Scrolling Memories by dave ever since I started this journey. After talking to many people I am ready to make a change. Too many people don't even know what scrolling is. I am also doing some projects that aren't scrolled. Please give me some feedback on these ideas. kmmcrafts Posted August 17, 2020 Report Posted August 17, 2020 You have a online store that you're changing the name of for better viability or just changing it to make it more geared to what you make and do? For online purposes it should be short ,to the point, and easy to remember.. preferably geared around the products you sell.. Mine is lame.. but I already have a following so I'll likely keep it.. I've made a new business and purchased the domain for my new business.. I don't have my website open for viewing yet but hope to before too long.. Quote

meflick Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 Hey Dave. The first one, Precision Woodwork, doesn’t make me think of the type of projects that you do but instead makes me think more of carpentry type woodwork. The others all make me think more of the artistic wood working that you do. Of those, I think all convey that message so I would go with the shortest one to make it easier to remember which is Wood Art. amazingkevin and Dave Monk 2 Quote
spirithorse Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 Hi, Dave, I really like Precision Woodwork because it immediately brings to mind this isn't just run of the mill crafts and I also like Wooden Art but, think the apostrophe in your Wood'n Art spelling makes random searches get fewer hits. Here are my wishes for great success and, once people see your tremendous talent, I'm sure you'll be rolling in the dough. Don't forget the poor folks like me that knew you before! God Bless! kmmcrafts Posted August 18, 2020 Report Posted August 18, 2020 Well you didn't really specify if this was going to turn into a domain name or not so here is my take.. I like Wood'nArt By Dave best... BUT.. if it's going to be a online thing it won't get picked up by searches too good.. For online it could be done WoodNArtByDave Second choice I like best is Wood Art By Dave And Third is Wood Creations By Dave The rest of them I don't care for much but that's just me.. teachnlearn Posted August 21, 2020 Report Posted August 21, 2020 Ran a business in IL until we closed and moved out of state. With this Covid we have been stuck without a house or home to function in. Spent time reading books and websites for a while before we named our business. Look at the words and read each of them, do they straight out describe right off what you are selling? Precision can be very descriptive for us on a scroll board, Looking at the word outside of us, do you make precise wooden rulers? Calipers? Art is a very open concept word and covers woodworking along with painting, fabrics and a thousand other fields. If that fits fine. Creations will cover anything you make in wood if that is what you want. Its also a very general word. Keepsakes can be viewed as gifts or items grandma left or I've seen stores labeled with this and its just anything nick nack they sell. The above are just approaches on looking at your name selection from other people, that have no idea what you do. You know what you do. I read years ago, can you describe in 5 sentences what you do to another person that you see in an elevator? It pushes you to narrow your thoughts to a very detailed description, which can help define a specific busn. name. Use the internet and word processor and put some of your words into it. Look at the thesaurus and see if the words are what you want or may give you a jump to a new word. Put the words into etsy and google and see what comes up. Are they selling what you are? Wood working covers backyard Diy to kitchen rehab to building a house or desk or carving in wood to sculpting wood. Some people have just used their names on trucks and it worked. AAA Plumbing. Now who is AAA? If your doing internet, your website/ name is going into search engines and will be categorized with other sites. General wood working name will work at at flea market when they see what you have. How your going to advertise, drive people to your site is another topic in it self. If you have a site under a name, and change the name, are they going to know its still your site? RJF Dave Monk and kmmcrafts 2 Quote
kmmcrafts Posted August 22, 2020 Report Posted August 22, 2020 I'm no pro at names or online business's but I don't feel you have to be that critical about the words you use as long as it's a catchy and easy name to remember.. My business name is simple and easy to remember BUT.. if out and about and run into a old co-worker etc and they ask what my site addy is.. I verbally say KevsKrafts... They go home and type in KevsCrafts.. I purposely spelled it with a K back in the day without really putting much thought into it.. Too many followers know me as KevsKrafts for me to just throw the name away and start over from scratch.. Now, for search engines to rank your site higher you could be more specific by saying woodpuzzles... But that leaves you with making just puzzles or whatever it is you name it and sell at the time... For me.. KevsKrafts works well because I've made a lot of different things to sell over the years.. (crafts is a generic word.. and can fit the bill for using my laser or CNC if I wanted to go that route).. I'm not stuck with just puzzles or toys or ?? While search engines would more easily pick up your site if you name it woodpuzzles and someone searched jigsawpuzzles.. having the site meta description describing wood puzzles too will help.. So in that sense yes if I was selling solely puzzles... having puzzles in my business name is smart to do.. It describes what you are selling and is also keyworded for SEO.. Now.. where it comes to be really important to use correct keyword is in item titles and descriptions...Most shoppers have an idea of what they're looking for.. and you need to think about how you would search for the items you list online... Now days domain selling sites ( some of them anyway ) make it easy for you to pick names.. as they tell you if you have any popular key search words in the name and it also gives suggestions for better names etc.. Back when I did this.. there was nothing like that to help you decide.. teachnlearn and Dave Monk 2 Quote

Back when I did this.. there was nothing like that to help you decide.. I started business at a young age, somehow I got older over the years. I started with yellow pages, white pages and paper receipts. Started with a notebook for 'record keeping'' and moved to a double ledger. I learned business names needed to be memorable and have some meaning. I know large companies research and test names of their company and product and pay high amounts just for the development. Learned not to reinvent the wheel and have studied what companies do for advertising, even food placement in a store is thought out. 'Cheap stuff is on the bottom, high price stuff is at eye level'. Its always up to the person doing the business. Starbucks does coffee, but I don't know what Stars or bucks have to do with coffee. I'm basically giving practical brainstorming tips. RJF Yes me too... This is why everyone back in the yellow pages days tried to make a name that was alphabetical or numeral order... AAACrafts would be at the top on the first page of the yellow pages over BBBcrafts etc.. Been there done that stuff..Names didn't have to be anything about what you did because you was categorized in the yellow pages.. They still don't but you need to have a very catchy name that people can remember easily.. It's one thing to be a etsy, eBay, or amazon seller and it's another to build brand and run your own site.. When a person buys a lamp on one of the site's mentioned and a friend ask them where they got it.. they won't say KevsKrafts... they'll say I got it from amazon or ebay etc etc... but each one of these amazon and ebay sellers is an individual business... branding is tough to do... selling on one of these sites is a piece of cake in comparison.. teachnlearn 1 Quote
