ChelCass Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 Thinking of upgrading to this saw. What is everybody's thoughts on this saw? TIA OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted January 25, 2021 Report Posted January 25, 2021 It is probably the most used saw on this site..... I had one,,, it was a good saw for me, never gave me a bit of trouble..... They can require some maintenance, like any machine... Anyway, you should bet lots of responses, if not just search DeWalt 788 pm this site.. ChelCass and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Roberta Moreton Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 It’s a good saw. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

I am considering the Delta 20 inch which is 100.00 cheaper. Really don't need the light or stand. Thanks. Edited January 26, 2021 by ChelCass OCtoolguy, kmmcrafts and Collin 2 1 Quote

Okay well I understand that if you don't need the stand or light.. I considered buying it as he told me to make him a offer as he just wanted it out of his way.. and I could use the stand, light, and that mobile base for a different machine.. I bought one of those mobile bases for my bandsaw and they aren't cheap depending on what one it is.. If you're set on a new saw.. yes the Delta is cheaper.. and if you can wait it out until Home Depot puts them on sale they quite often are $299.. OCtoolguy 1 Quote

I thought they did go on sale and I'm not in any hurry. I have three other saws that all work. I will keep an eye on HD. Thanks for the heads up. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Jim Finn Posted January 26, 2021 Report Posted January 26, 2021 I had this saw and for fre3twork it is great. I do not do fretwork. I killed mine in 20 months making toys. Cutting 1 1/2" pine. It is a good saw but is NOT durable! I now use Hegners,(Not so good for light work like fretwork but is VERY durable). OCtoolguy, ChelCass and kmmcrafts 3 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted January 27, 2021 Report Posted January 27, 2021 I would go for the Dewalt over the Delta. I think the fact that Delta is a clone is not good and the parts/service situation on them is terrible. Buy a good used Dewalt, do the service on it and it will last a very long time. The Hegners I have are very tough. I do however, do mostly fretwork with #2 and 2/0 blades. ChelCass, OCtoolguy and Jim Finn 3 Quote

I wouldn't pay the $200 as a new one on sale many times is $299.. But $150 ish might buy it.. Just seen it and thought of you looking so thought I'd share the info. https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/249435920064518 EDIT: My bad i should have read the ad, He wants $300 for the saw.. I'll leave the link as he is selling other stuff too that someone might have an interest in. Edited January 28, 2021 by kmmcrafts OCtoolguy 1 Quote

If you were closer you could have one!!! OCtoolguy and ChelCass 2 Quote

LarryEA Posted January 31, 2021 Report Posted January 31, 2021 I have two Deltas. One for over 20 years, the other over 10. Both 40-694's and they still run excellent. Clone or not I'd buy another! amazingkevin, OCtoolguy and ChelCass 3 Quote
Bconn Posted February 1, 2021 Report Posted February 1, 2021 For a good guide on maintenance and rebuilding go to Gwinnet woodworkers web site and click on videos. They are on YouTube. Bob Brokaw does a great job showing how to overhaul the DW788. ChelCass 1 Quote
