jbrowning Posted November 29, 2021 Report Posted November 29, 2021 (edited) Hello everyone, my brothers wife is retiring and they will be getting a RV and travel some. He is wanting me to make her a sign post (like the one in M.A.S.H.) that has arrows pointing in different directions. He is asking for it to be about 10 ft tall and to be made up in two 5 ft sections that can be attached when it is set up. This sign post will be outside in the weather while they are camping and I'm trying to figure out a good type of wood to make this out of. I'm wondering if Pine, Cedar or Red Wood would be the best options? He will be painting and staining it before it goes into the elements. Do anyone have any suggestions? I would sure like to hear them. Thank you Jim Edited November 29, 2021 by jbrowning Quote
scrollerpete Posted November 29, 2021 Report Posted November 29, 2021 I would use Cedar myself jbrowning and Badgerboy 1 1 Quote
Dan Posted November 29, 2021 Report Posted November 29, 2021 Most pallet boards will hold up well unpainted. Cheap and rustic looking. jbrowning 1 Quote
Fedido Posted November 30, 2021 Report Posted November 30, 2021 Like Scroller Pete, cedar will work best as it is naturally resistant to decay and bugs. Also smells nice cutting. Can be painted after sanding as well. Only thing is be careful cutting it as it likes to break easily. jbrowning 1 Quote
Joe W. Posted December 1, 2021 Report Posted December 1, 2021 Good timing . . . My wife wanted to do the same thing to show distance and place for our children. I got a few wood pallets from around town, cut them to size, sanded, primed, and painted them using stencils I made from our Scan n' Cut machine. The paint is enamel and should last at least for a few years. Now to find the time to put them on the post (always other project distractions and life getting in the way). jbrowning 1 Quote
jbrowning Posted December 2, 2021 Author Report Posted December 2, 2021 Thank you everyone, I think I'll stop by Lowes and/or Home Depot to see if I can find a couple of 4"x4" Cedar Posts and see if I can make them work. My brother said to make sure it is "STURDY". Thanks Jim Quote
