Joe W. Posted June 18, 2022 Report Posted June 18, 2022 Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes. My wife found on the side of the road an old crank record player turntable made by Strand. It needs TLC, but the turntable functions like it's supposed to. I'm trying to find a home for it - free. Tried the local Victrola museum but they weren't interested. So it's currently sitting in the garage, awaiting its fate. OCtoolguy and new2woodwrk 2 Quote
new2woodwrk Posted June 19, 2022 Report Posted June 19, 2022 There are phonograph museums all over the country - if you do a search for one, you may find one interested If it were me, I would attempt the restoration myself and then sell it Quote

The cabinet has some spots that need repair - veneer and two or three small trim pieces that need work. I am impressed with the speaker element - the metal that holds the arm is hollow and is connected to a speaker made entirely of wood. Volume control is a piece of wood that you move to block the sound between record player arm/needle and the speaker. The record player part itself can be lifted out of the cabinet - the gearing assembly is well built, complete with a speed control and brake to stop it completely. Then my wife told my daughter about it and now she wants to have and restore it. I have visions of that going sideways - as in - "DAD, can you help me?" (me: Heavy sigh) OCtoolguy and meflick 2 Quote

Thank for the reply, Joe. Having repaired a couple OLD curved glass, veneered China cabinets, I'd hesitate to take on a piece like your Victrola. Repairing veneer to perfection is a skill I've yet to master. Probably never will. Quote
