don watson Posted August 6, 2022 Report Posted August 6, 2022 I have recently finished a series of small animals, dinosaurs etc and was wondering if there was a child safe paint available to paint them. I think small children respond better to brightly painted wooden objects and would like to apply some type of paint to these pieces. I have seen some recommendations (Rustoleum etc) but I want to hear from people who regularly paint their pieces for children. I am in the UK and and would like paints that are available over here. Thanks for looking Don W Quote
John B Posted August 6, 2022 Report Posted August 6, 2022 G'day Don, I can't comment much on the UK, but all paints and finishes in Aust. are safe once they have cured with the exception of some industrial finishes. I typically use water based household paints, satin. Wilson142, don watson and tomsteve 2 1 Quote
barb.j.enders Posted August 6, 2022 Report Posted August 6, 2022 I have used Unicorn Spit and basic craft acrylic paints. I will then coat with Tung Oil. As John mentioned, they are then kid safe after they have cured. My grandkids haven't gotten sick yet!!! don watson, Dan and John B 2 1 Quote
don watson Posted August 6, 2022 Author Report Posted August 6, 2022 @ JohnB, it was the animals etc that you recently finished and I bought the book by Patrick and Patricia Spielman that you recommended and cut some out. My chief tester (18 month old great-grand-daughter) loves them but I think some paint would enhance them and I did notice she would try and have a bite at various bits. I read (somewhere) that Rustoleum paints were very good and had to be cured for a month before letting children at them. I will see what other suggestions come up hopefully here in the UK. @ barb.j,enders, I have some craft Acrylic paint and could try that but I think I would like a satin varnish finish. I suppose satin varnish will be ok over Acrylic paint John B 1 Quote
WayneMahler Posted August 9, 2022 Report Posted August 9, 2022 We have used a brand called Plaid. Dries quickly and is safe for using when crafting. Pretty sure the Mrs. got them at Michaels . Soap and water clean up. don watson 1 Quote
