My Daughter has asked me to make a cookbook Stand for her.  I was planning to use Butternut and Aspen. ¼ aspen with ⅛ Butternut on both sides. Mt that little voice in my head is telling me I should be using hard woods.

So, for those of you who do things like this, will the Butternut/aspen work or should I go Walnut/Maple?

The picture is what I'm going to make

Rather simple, ask your daughter!

Probably the best idea.  Second idea, go ahead and make both because somebody else is going to want one when they see her’s. 😉😏 You can give your daughter first dibs on the one she likes best. 🙂  two very different looks with those choices. Some would like the lighter wood tones, others like me, I think I would prefer the rich deep tones of the walnut with the lighter maple adding a bit of contrast.

Look forward to seeing them when you get them done. Do you have an actual pattern for one you are going to use, or are you going to make up your own from this picture?

Going off the picture, for years I've told my wife and daughter,  if there's something they want me to make, show me a picture!

I'll post pics when I finish the first one (Butternut and Aspen?)

Thanks Christopher. I suspected that was what you were doing. I have a hubby like that, just show him the pictures and he can usually create it. He has made many pieces of furniture and more from seeing the photos and me or my kids saying can you make this. 😉 I look forward to seeing your pics. Should be a beautiful piece.

Well, I've made some progress.  Still a ways to go but it's starting to look like  parts of a book stand. The pictures are the top rack (ready for preliminary sanding) the bottom section ( in the clamps) still have the top layer of Butternut to glue on. The leg to hold the book part up, and some additional layering for where I'll attach the rubber feet. As this will be used in the kitchen I've decided rubber feet would be best.

This isn't a difficult project,  a majority of your time is waiting for glue to dry. And I only get a few hours per week to work on it, hopefully I'll have it finished by the end of the month and on its way to my daughter.

Looking awesome.  Did you create a pattern to keep as you have been going along?  I'd forget the next time what I had done. 😉😊

Nope, no pattern. It's pretty straightforward,  the strips are 2" wide and 10½ long,  kinda falls into place after that. Took longer that I would have thought to glue everything up, but my shop time is limited.

Nice job, I really like the page holders, I may just have to add those. I also like your brace idea better than the one I used. Something to keep in mind if I build another.

Finished,  ready to ship to my daughter in Washington.  Pretty much what I had envisioned from the start. She is a huge DnD fan (Dungens and Dragons) so I routered in her name using DnD inferno letters.
