Hawk Posted November 14, 2022 Report Posted November 14, 2022 Took one of the barn boards I salvaged from the barn in my back yard that I had taken down this summer. Ive always figured the wood was pine, but after I cleaned it up with the hand plane I was shocked to find what was under the grey. Looks to me like soft maple. I got most open spaces in my shop stuffed with the barn wood and out in my garage. Still have more to salvage but what a score. RabidAlien, barb.j.enders, meflick and 2 others 5 Quote
Joe W. Posted November 14, 2022 Report Posted November 14, 2022 Congrats on your discovery. Recently, I dropped off a couple items at the Restore store that hadn't sold at my wife's last 3 yard sales and browsed the store afterwards. Was surprised to see the really low prices for many of the wood furniture items there (dressers and the like). Some of the pieces looked to be made of real wood (i.e.; maple). The thought crossed my mind the useable scrollable wood from it might be cheaper than buying a piece from a lumber store. Just another idle thought in my search for wood. don watson and RabidAlien 2 Quote

I/ve salvaged wood from many of furniture. Although these days it's more scrap than good wood. Not like the "old" days (lol) when you could get quite a bit of good hard wood from a chair and such.
