Scrappile Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 (edited) Been watching "1883" On Paramount TV. Not better than "Lonesome Dove" but the best since "Lonesome Dove". If you do not know "Lonesome Dove", give up go to sleep, you are not a cowboy or close. Really enjoying it... So much so I had to get my BlackHawk Supersingle Six revolver out of the safe and just listen to the beautiful sound of cocking a single action revolver. Only thing as good is listening to working a lever action model 94 Winchester or other lever action. Okay Just had to say it, Nothing to to do with anything. The closest I came to being a cowboy was being a Marine. Edited March 10, 2023 by Scrappile RabidAlien, OCtoolguy, Roberta Moreton and 1 other 3 1 Quote

The closest I came to being a cowboy was being a Marine. I know the feeling perfectly, Paul. I was in an era where I didn't go into any branch of the military, but I spent a career in law enforcement. Most of my career was as a training officer where I gave firearms instructions as well as many other training fields. I started competing in firearms when I was 13. My father was also a firearms instructor with a sheriff's department. In 1993 I was able to compete in a world class competition. I shot in two separate matches; one I took the gold with a world record and the other I took silver. When I got out of police competition, I purchased a Cowboy Competition lever action with the anticipation of shooting in cowboy matches but my eyesight started failing me and never proceeded into that genre. But the sound of a working lever or the clicking of a single action revolver is like music to my ears. I still shoot occasionally. I'm fortunate enough to have a range in my back yard. preprius Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 I am not sure I shared this before. But I did do this 2 years ago. It is a short video of an artist (My) conception steam engine. This is in my backyard. I had to have some spare fuel in the tender for quick access. Silver and gold cars and ok with some safes. Hope this brings a smile to us want to be cowboys. 1883 Series was a great series. In the 1990s , On weekends . . . I have dredged for gold in the Seirras just a few miles down stream of the 16 to 1 gold mine. Against the law now. I have mined opals in Mojave desert. Against the law now. My grand father was born 1900. He made extra money as a trick shooter with pump 22. Also a pool (billiard) shark. So somewhere in me I have old west built into me. RabidAlien Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 Until I hit the lotto, one of my favorite long guns is a Marlin lever-action 30-30 from....mid 1980's, I think. Love the look and heft of wood and steel. The other is a WWII era Mosin-Nagant bolt-action, iron sights are still accurate enough to remove the X from a target at 100yds. I'd LOVE to get an old Winchester lever-action, its near the top of my lotto list, just under M1 Garand, Springfield 1903, and BAR. Scrappile, ChelCass and OCtoolguy 3 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted March 10, 2023 Report Posted March 10, 2023 Ah you have plucked a chord in my heart. I grew up with guns in my hands. I got my first .22 at age 8. I have competed in competition military 3 gun matches and actually won the Cal state championship in the early 80's. I got into precision air pistol shooting too. Our club used to compete against a German club in Anaheim. I broke their club record and that record still stands today. They weren't happy. I have 2 1894 Winchester 30-30's and 2 Marlin .22 levers. One has octagon barrel. I also inherited a 1893 Winchester pump .22 octagonal from my father-in-law. I have many hand guns. I sleep next to a .357 mag Colt Lawman 2 inch snubbie. It's loaded with black talon ammo. My collection of 1911 .45 autos is my prize. Because of my days of competition that collection is my pride and joy. I used to load all my own ammo. The only way I could afford to compete. I used to burn up 400-500 rounds a week. I even cast all my own lead. That hobby was the highlight of my life. Thanks Paul for bringing back all those memories. Oh, I'm proudly a lifetime member of the NRA as are my boys. Scrappile 1 Quote

The Winchester pump .22 with octagonal barrel is one of my dream rifles. I shoot long guns left handed so the majority of long guns kick the brass out across my face. I have a Marlin .22 semi-auto that is an accurate a gun of any in my collection but the octagonal barrel is my dream. I also have a Savage .308 that was the left hand proto-type Savage used to set their tooling for left handed sniper rifles. Extremely accurate!!! In sniper school I would shoot .68 cal paint balls hanging from a string at 100-yards. I've actually shot it out to 1000 yards but that really wasn't practical in my line of work. It was done more as a confidence builder than anything else. My Glock 22 has it's bed beside my pillow in the headboard. It was my assigned firearm when on the police department. I still have my 6" S&W, one of the handguns I used in competition, but I've pretty much retired that one. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
