Ken O Posted January 18, 2012 Report Posted January 18, 2012 1968 Smirnoff this time. This ones for ME. 57 inches long, 23 1/4 wide. Mostly from 1/8 baltic birch plywood. I also have access to some carbon fiber with another project I'm helping with, so I took a few liberties to try an experiment. To lighten it up a little we took some maple veneer and laminated a layer of carbon fiber to the back, then used it as skins. Should be light and strong. Quote
Ken O Posted January 18, 2012 Author Report Posted January 18, 2012 And the rest to bring it up to tonight. Quote
Ken O Posted January 19, 2012 Author Report Posted January 19, 2012 http://www.pnwta.org/photoalbum.php?gal ... r%20Boat_1 wolfmoon, me too. This build will go quick. Don't have to wait on anyone else for parts this time. Here are a few of the other boats in the club. They have to be 1/6th scale replicas of the original boats that raced the unlimited circuit between the 40's and present. I don't care for the new turbine styles, they're all the same. I like the older ones that had some personality. The one I'm building is the only one that had twin tails and the weird flare in the back. Why go along with the crowd? Quote
amazingkevin Posted January 25, 2012 Report Posted January 25, 2012 another fine job of race boats construction from the best in the business ,KEN O! Must be real exciting building your own from your own design!Show us your blue ribbons !Wish i could do what your doing .I love seeing your progress each step of the way! This ones a biggy. What will power this giant? Ken O Posted January 27, 2012 Author Report Posted January 27, 2012 Thanks Kevin, I'm not the best by any means but it is fun. This one will have a modified 26cc motor that I'm pulling out of another smaller (44inch) boat. That boat ran close to 70mph in race trim. This new hull is bigger, heavier and not as aerodynamic but I'm still expecting 60mph if all goes well. I have another motor that has even more potential but I've never ran it and I'd rather work on setup first and not have to worry about tuning a new motor at the same time. Once I get the hull to ride correctly then I'll stick the other one in and see what it can do. Quote
Ken O Posted February 6, 2012 Author Report Posted February 6, 2012 The sponson skins, turn fin, and other hardware is on. Quote
Ken O Posted February 12, 2012 Author Report Posted February 12, 2012 The hull is done. Next is to make the front and rear cowling. Quote

Ken O Posted March 22, 2012 Author Report Posted March 22, 2012 Ok, got the paint done. Decals are on the way. I'm not the best painter so I need to do a little touch up here and there but it came out pretty good. Quote
Robert Phillips Posted March 22, 2012 Report Posted March 22, 2012 Looks spot on Ken job very well done Quote
Helenm2807 Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Looks Fantastic!! Well done Ken. I have similar difficulties with paint jobs and someone gave me this little tip that I find really helps. Use masking tape along the line between the colours then paint along the tape (and a little over it) in the colour you've masked off. When the paints dry, repaint the area in the second colour. Not sure if I've made myself clear so did a quick pic. You may already know this, but if not - hope it helps. H. Quote
amazingkevin Posted March 23, 2012 Report Posted March 23, 2012 Shazam! Ley's see how high that rooster tail goes soon!I got to hand it to you ,your the master builder for sure! Quote
Ken O Posted April 15, 2012 Author Report Posted April 15, 2012 Ok, it got wet today, 100th anniversary of the Titanic! Go figure! The first couple laps were ok, then the driveshaft bracket slipped and kinked the driveshaft. Not bad for the first time out. Lots of speed left in it. And it didn't sink!! Sorry about the audio, my camera is shot. Ken Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted April 16, 2012 Report Posted April 16, 2012 Looks great and sounds great to me. Quote
Ken O Posted April 22, 2012 Author Report Posted April 22, 2012 Second run was today. the nose was getting really light so I adjusted the angle on the prop and it started hopping a little like in this video. I adjusted it back a little bit and after the third lap it did a backflip and barrel roll. Need to fix the tailfins now, whoops. Looks like I might need some weight in the nose. Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted April 22, 2012 Report Posted April 22, 2012 How do you fix something like that? Quote
Ken O Posted April 22, 2012 Author Report Posted April 22, 2012 How do you fix something like that? I don't know, but I have to figure it out by next weekend! haha. Quote
Travis Posted April 23, 2012 Report Posted April 23, 2012 Uggg...that sux. I enjoyed the video, though. That thing really gets up to some really good speeds! Quote
Toninho Posted April 24, 2012 Report Posted April 24, 2012 Great job Ken! I loved his boat and dedication that you have! It is the love of wood! Quote
Ken O Posted April 25, 2012 Author Report Posted April 25, 2012 How do you fix something like that? Laminate it with a sheet of carbon fiber! Do this on both sides and they will never break again. (something else will) The other fin was cracked too, so I decided to fix the problem now instead of later when the next whoops happens. You notice I didn't say "if it happens" haha. Too bad I didn't get it on camera, it was quite a wipeout, haven't blown one off the water like that in a long time. Quote
Ken O Posted May 8, 2012 Author Report Posted May 8, 2012 They let me run it in the scale class on Sunday even though I had no stickers, no dummy engine and primer on the back. Did well, but had some electrical problems that sidelined me a bit. When you can pass going wide around the outside then you know you have some speed. http://cdenslow.smugmug.com/RC-Hydropla ... &k=H62JHdq Quote
