tony coleman Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I just replaced the motor on my joiner, its not the same make as the joiner but it does have a stepped pull on it,not sure what speed it does, question I'm asking is does it matter if it works a higher speed than the original, I'm only going by the tone of the machine, or would I be better running it at a slower speed Quote
kmmcrafts Posted April 13, 2023 Report Posted April 13, 2023 I'm no expert of this type of equipment but my opinion is that the most important thing is how fast you're feeding the material vrs. the speed of the rotating knives. I have a cheap Delta benchtop jointer that had a variable speed and the variable speed quick working and no parts were available to repair it. I wired the thing direct so it runs full speed all the time. That is how I always ran it anyway.. many folks back when I posted about the VS issue mentioned that was just a sales gimmick on low end machines to offer a variable speed and the larger units don't have it. Obviously if you have dull knives and you're not pushing the wood through fast enough you'd get burnt edges maybe.. which goes back to feed rate.. I'm not sure if I'd want to run the thing turning way faster than it originally did but if it's just a little faster I don't really think there would be any issue. Maybe someone with better knowledge will have some input. Quote
BadBob Posted April 14, 2023 Report Posted April 14, 2023 Faster is generally better but be sure you don't exceed the manufacturer's speed. Quote
