Clayton717 Posted February 3, 2012 Report Posted February 3, 2012 Here is a travel mug I turned on my lathe. I used walnut and maple veneer. The mug is 16 ounces. I coated it with 4 coats of wipe on poly. then buffed it on the lathe. Quote
WolfmoonCT Posted February 3, 2012 Report Posted February 3, 2012 Interesting.. so how did you do it? is it a metal insert that you glued vener over, then sanded it smooth? Quote
Clayton717 Posted February 3, 2012 Author Report Posted February 3, 2012 I started by cutting 8 strips of walnut 7/8" thick by 1 7/16" wide and cut at 22.5 degree angle and 7"long. cut 7/8" wide strips of maple veneer. and glued between the walnut. when finished glueing together it was octagon shape. then glued a thick pieces (1 1/4") to bottom. this left me room for bottom of mug and a tenion to fit into my lathe chuck. glue a scrap of 1/4" ply on top just to help center on lathe. then proceeded to turn round. once done parted off scrap ply and hollowed out center for the insert kit to fit into. then finished to the shape I wanted. it was all turned on the lathe. The kit was from Rocker - http://www.rockler.com/product.cfm?page ... AVEL%20MUG Quote
Lucky2 Posted February 3, 2012 Report Posted February 3, 2012 Clayton, you did a wonderful job on the segmemtation and turning of this mug, it looks spectacular. Thanks for letting us all have a look at it. Len Quote
Dan Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Cool mug Clayton. Have you thought of trying some scrollwork or inlay before turning one of those? Quote
Clayton717 Posted February 5, 2012 Author Report Posted February 5, 2012 Cool mug Clayton. Have you thought of trying some scrollwork or inlay before turning one of those? I did actually. I made one for my daughter, and I scrolled out a ribbon and filled it with pink resin(same resin I use to make my pens) It came out good. thought I had a picture of it but can't find it. I'll have to see if she can take a picture of it and send it to me. Quote
