Gene Howe Posted December 13, 2023 Report Posted December 13, 2023 My DW 788 suddenly developed a severe knock. Not in the normal 788's knock area. This one is in the head somewhere. It's in the repair shop now. They're backed up with work. No estimate of when they'll get it back to normal. Hopefully it'll not too long. I guess it's back to the bandsaw for a spell. I've been wanting to do some bandsaw boxes, anyway. I've got 4 more of Steve Good's personalized ornaments to do, though. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Scrappile Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 Hope they figure it out, however if they do not do not give up, That sounds like a familiar problem. There may be help here so you can fix it yourself. My experience, not personal experience but reading, is most these repair shop rarely, if ever see a scroll saw. You may have a better chance repairing it yourself. A lot of them are not the difficult. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
rjweb Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 Gene, maybe its time for another scroll saw for Christmas, always have a backup, RJ ChelCass and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
OCtoolguy Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 Probably just the tension rod rattling. Easy fix. Quote
barb.j.enders Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 My DeWalt is in the shop as well. I knew going in, a three week wait time. Hoping for a call today! Gene Howe and OCtoolguy 2 Quote

Bill WIlson Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 I know there are several videos on YT showing how to troubleshoot and fix various problems with the Dewalt. One example is the 4 part series by Gwinnet Woodworkers. Here's a link to part 1. As was mentioned above, you may want to attempt a DIY repair. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bNt2Y0ajDwk Gene Howe and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
Gene Howe Posted December 14, 2023 Author Report Posted December 14, 2023 Thanks, Bill. Unfortunately it's too late. It's already in the shop and the $50 for the first half hour of labor has been extracted from my wallet. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Bill WIlson Posted December 14, 2023 Report Posted December 14, 2023 Perhaps it will be an option, if the wait becomes extended and unacceptable. Gene Howe and OCtoolguy 1 1 Quote

I greased all the bearings but when I went to put it together, I couldn't get the tension correct. The lever either, wouldn't move or it would move all the way over and still not be tensioned. After a couple of hours of fiddling and a few tears, a new saw was purchased. The DeWalt sat most of the year in storage. Finally took it in. OCtoolguy 1 Quote
Bill WIlson Posted December 15, 2023 Report Posted December 15, 2023 Trust me, I understand. I'm not always the most successful at tearing things apart and putting them back together. I either break something else, lose a part or end up with something extra when it's all put back together. Gene Howe and OCtoolguy 2 Quote
