What is a bloc sander?

I fell in love with Porta Cable line of tools due to Norm Abrams. He had it I had to buy it. I think he sold more tools for that company than any advertising they ever did. I loved watch his show. Learned so much and enjoyed his way of presenting. yes he had to fit all in a half hour but you get the jist of the project. Here is the #330 bloc sander. Not available any more. They have a lighter version. This sander was my work horse. It was heavy enough that weight was enough to sand with. Easy to change paper I use to buy precut 1/4 sheet paper and still do. You name it, it was sanded with that sander and still today. I wore one out and wore 2 plates out on the one I have now. But it still kicking. Many people would hate this sander but me and Norm love it.

While I am on this page I would like to say  that I bought a so called socket set. It is more like a tool box full of tools. I use sockets in the shop on occassion but use them more out in the garage for working on trucks and or other projects. So every time I need a socket set I have to take from garage and bring down to shop. Well I am in the middle of fixing my 12/32 Performax drum sander and needed sockets. This is when my brother told me about Home Depot sales on sets of sockets for Christmas. Decided perfect time to get a set for the shop. Well have to say was surprised at the sales on these. I wound up buying a Husky 290 piece $700 value set for $168. Have to say I do not know how they sell for this price. Husky is a good tool brand. Have lots of their sockets. Has both Standard and Metric sockets 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" sizes in both 8 point and 16point and short and long sockets. Alond with allen keys sets bot ST. and Metric. in 2 different lengths, Combo open end and box wrench sets again both styles. All the little driver sets for star, phillips, straight bits used in sockets and or drills. Standard and Metris allen key sockets and much more. Well worth the $$$. Comes in a nice case with a lid and drawers for the sockets. Pull a drawer out and take to work area. Very happy with this set and it will be in the shop and stay there. It has some weight to it so not easy toting around. If you are in the market I suggest check them out at Home Dept. they have a 270 piece for same price but I bought the 290. Not sure what one has over the other but both worth the money.

That is what I call a 1/4 sheet sander.

Those were ads in Norm's shows. They started with Shopsmith, and when Shopsmth refused to pay them, they covered up the logos and replaced them with tools from companies that would pay them. The show was an infomercial. I watched them every Saturday for years.

Not to be picky JT but I think you meant 6 & 12 point sockets. 8 & 16 would be strange.

I have two of those 1/4 sheet sanders and neither one work well for me.. Maybe the brands I bought but no matter how careful I was with them they would leave little squiggly lines around the corners of the sander as if the edges were digging in more than the main flat surface of the pad.. I first bought the Hitachi one.. it was like that so then I went and bought a Bosch brand thinking maybe since i loved the Bosch orbital sander maybe their 1/4 sheet sander would be a good one.. But it's same way...

I have a really el cheapo little sort of triangle shaped sander that I bought at a Aldi grocery store of all places for $6.99 and the box was jammed full of sandpaper of various grits.. I figured the sandpaper was probably junk for the price I paid for it.. this was back in maybe 2006 - 7 ish and that thing was really gentle on anything I sanded.. the stack of paper for it lasted me over a year.. no kidding when I said it came with a big stack of paper. Anyway once I used up the paper I never could find any the same shape / size etc.. Cut my own papers from the 5" random orbital sander but having to cut them go a little old after I started doing a lot of business.. I still have that sander but don't use it much other than some really delicate projects.. it's so gentle and small easy to get into tight spots with it.. also was really comfortable to hold onto.. For a really cheap sander it's probably the best one I've owned.. I bought the 1/4 sheet sanders hoping they would be the same way and could readily buy papers for it..

So I'm not going to talk on this thread about the laser after this post.. as I know many do not like the discussion of these tools.

I just wanted to say it was delivered today and I think I really underestimated the size of this thing, LOL Going to have to rearrange the shop to make this fit somewhere..  It's kinda like the Hawk when you first get one.. in the pictures they really don't look that huge but when you get it set up in your shop you realize they take a big footprint..

I took the top off of the crate thinking there would be a lot of packing material around the edges of it.. no idea that this thing was actually as big as the crate..LOL

IMG_4325.jpeg

This came in the other day on a separate delivery which also through me off.. This is the chiller to keep the laser cool..

I still have two 1/4-sheet sanders only because I have a lot of sandpaper cut to fit. It is 80 grit left over from a project I did long ago. When I got my hands on random orbit sander, I almost quit using them.

DEWALT
ATOMIC 20-Volt MAX Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Kit (2-Tool) with (2) 2.0Ah Batteries, Charger and Bag

I think this is a good deal. I can't buy the bare tools for this price.

Yes I bought those 2 years ago along with a bunch of tools when they were on sale at Christmas 2 years ago. This year they had a few but not as many. I know my brother was watching the finish, brad nailer and pin nailer. They were basically the everyday prices. I told him though he would be much better to get an air compressor and the air tools. better control over depth of nails and also price of guns are much cheaper.

My wife bought me a drum sander.  Just the right size. I had to get a mobile tool stand so I can take it outside.  Since thos pic I added a bottom shelf.

Far right of pic shows some boards leaning up again cabinents.  On top of the cabinents is 12 more "Pepperwood" boards.

Way in the back is my scrollsaw and drill press.

Like it. Is that the 12/24 model? If you dimension your own wood these are a must. I have had my Performax 16/32 quite some time. Right now I have to get it back together I had to replace a part on it. But feeling under the weather I have been unable to get in the shop. Be careful with that carpet in the shop. You do not want to trip over the edge of it if it rolls up on you. If you are going to use a shop vac as a dust collector, I highly suggest get a hepa filter for it. With those cloth filters too much dust escapes with tools like that drum sander. Have fun and look forward to seeing what you make.

This sander is the 1020 model, 10inches, 20 inches.

I flattened the 4 boards and it took a bit of learning.  A quarter of turn of the knob is about the most I can do without popping the overload button.  The feed rate also had to be played with.  The belt keeps going to the right or left. So I adjust the belt tension while it is sanding the boards.

yes you have to remember these are sanders and not planers. If i have to sand exotics I will step down the grit of paper because they can clog paper so quickly. I will finish sanding with a palm sander. But will switch to the 180 grit for a ever so light sanding to just kiss the wood to get some rough marks off before palm sander.
