thats really stinks. If it works when he removes the virus and you don't lose all you patterns and projects. I would back them up, put them on disk, flashdrive, or external hard drive. Mine are backed up on an external hard drive now there were on a disk, just in case something like this happened. I hope you get them back Kevin. don't know what I would do if I lost all mine.

Hope you get all your patterns and pics back Kevin. I thought I had lost mine once, but then I remembered that I moved the folder. I guess I should get in the habit of backing things up once in a while.

I make a living on teaching proper computer usage and back up. You would be surprised on how many folks do NOT have an off computer backup of their important files and things like email addresses and favorites for the internet. I make it a point to teach my clients how to set up a good solid back up so that if they do get hit with a virus, computer malfunction such as a hard drive crash they do not lose everything. Yes at first it can be a P.I.T.A ( Pain In The A@@ ) but once it saves you time and money you quickly learn to do it on a regular basis. Kevin I would at the very least take and burn to DVD all your patterns, program install files, Favorites, E-Mail Addresses and the like and then store them someplace. I am glad though that you were able to recover your system fairly quickly.

Live and learn!, seems a way of life for me,I did try my hand at "back up "Not knowing for sure what to do i ended up copying the 4 files of pictures ,patterns, photo,s and what not 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 times!!I just spent days sorting it all out, cleaned it all up and get the virus.figures! Here i could now after 6 years finally find things i know i have but don't know how i filed them.i have the disc's i could give the computer guy but then i'd have to go thru and delete thousands and thousands of things that got duplicated by me.I backed it up with data files, the whole 9 yards 5 months ago on 5 cd's i think. It's scary not knowing what im doing.so you see why i cant make patterns, lol. My scroll tools, paper and other wise is my life blood.i don't want to lose one drop.Oh i forgot i was blessed with an i- phone as 2 of my phones went in the pool and a mini computer ,an inspiration by dell, brand new but slow.thank you jesus! So things are getting better little by little.

Very sorry to here this.

I had system crashes too, and know your pain. The "OH NO!!, what the F*!#$!!" feeling of dread.

After days of running scans and cleaning up my computer I was able to recover my files.

Backup is a life saver. However, I don't do it as often as I should.

Hope everything was recovered on your system.

kevin : i use an external hard drive and some usb memory keys, sometimes i burn a dvd ( like every 6 months ) my rule is " if the file value is more than 15minutes of work, i duplicate it"

but the 2 most important things : my computer is mine and only mine. and i don't use windows, linux ( ubuntu ) is easier to use, more reliable, more virus-proof, and faster....

keeping a computer and a scrollsaw in the same room is a bad idea, fine wood dust can jam computer fan.

Hey Kevin,

Not sure if you've gotten an anti-virus softeware yet.  If not try AVG, it has a totally free program and you can download it from  www.filehippo.com.

Also, back ups are good; however, I use Amazon Cloud to back up my patterns and other things I want to keep.  This is free as well.  The program presupposes you have a login ID with amazon. If you open amazon's home page you'll see "Amazon Cloud" under shop departments. Just follow the instructions.  You get 5 gig free.   I have beau coup patterns there as well as pictures of family, friends, and work.

Just a couple of suggestions to help keep from catching a nasty virus.

Eric
