Dan Posted November 12, 2013 Report Posted November 12, 2013 The friend that gave me some cedar gave me 18 more boards so I made him a pen. The wood has a lot of character and it is easy to work with. Clayton717, bobscroll, Travis and 2 others 5 Quote

WolfmoonCT Posted November 13, 2013 Report Posted November 13, 2013 That is pretty Dan. I'm guessing it's a CA finish on it? Quote
Dan Posted November 13, 2013 Author Report Posted November 13, 2013 That is pretty Dan. I'm guessing it's a CA finish on it? Yes, it is a CA finish. Thanks. Quote

oldhudson Posted November 14, 2013 Report Posted November 14, 2013 (edited) I've never seen cedar look so good - color, grain, gloss, WOW. I made a bench with it this summer, but it doesn't look nearly as cool. Edited December 12, 2013 by oldhudson Quote
Lucky2 Posted November 15, 2013 Report Posted November 15, 2013 That's a nice looking pen Dan, the only thing I don't like about Cedar is how soft it is. Because of the softness you have to have a hard finish for the pen, and I still don't know if that would protect the pen from getting marked up with little dents. Have you ever had any stabilized Cedar, is there such a thing? I would love to get some stabilized, just to see how much harder it would make the blank. Your friend should be very happy to be the recipient, of such a good looking pen. Thanks for sharing it with us. Len Quote
Dan Posted November 15, 2013 Author Report Posted November 15, 2013 Thanks guys. Len, after turning the cedar almost to size, I soak it with CA. The cedar drinks it up. That is the way I stabilize it right now. You are right, it is very soft wood if not stabilized. There are some guys who stabilize blanks with various mixtures but those blanks can be expensive. I don't know if anyone does cedar that way. Quote
amazingkevin Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 My cedar supplyer went bananas when I showed him you pen blown up on copy paper as big as I could with www.rapidresizer.com. He really really really liked it! Quote
Lucky2 Posted November 16, 2013 Report Posted November 16, 2013 Dan, what is the name of the kit you used, is it a fountain pen or rollerball? And I hope you don't mind me asking, but, what price would you sell this pen for? I charge different prices for mine, it depends mostly on what kit I used. For one like this I would be charging anywhere $25.-$45. it all depends on what type of pen it is from fountain on down the line. I use the CA finish a lot on softwood blanks also. Do you turn any PR blanks also or do you stick with wood? This pen looks so good that I think I'll have to turn one for myself. Len Quote
