Dick the timber I use is Radiata Pine & the finish, i undercoat every piece except for the joining surfaces then a couple of coats of water based gloss acrylic for the colours,sometimes I mix the paints to get the desired colour finally a coat of gloss varnish ,then I glue them together,easy peasey.
