handym123 Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Hello Ok I just joined this forum a few days ago and I must say its great. I never kewn there were so many people doing this.I also did not know anything about the software programs out there. I just started a project to do my dog so I took pic went to walmart had it blown up. Then in free hand I made a stencil. Cut it out some parts fell out and I was not happy. So did some pattern touch up made a second one with a little more detail. A wee be better Then I found this site and wow just waht I needed. I got some programs started playing with them and found out they make my head hurt. It is going to take some time to figure them out. So far I want to do Dog over with much more detail buts it is not going to good. I am still trying to fig out how to download pics here and again my poor brian hurts. I have been able to download to photosmart and you can see the pics there. If anyone could follow link and take a look at what I did so far and maybe give some advice or copy Morgan My dog and make a pattern for it I would be most happy and my brain would to. thanks Ken. http://www.photoshop.com/user/handym123 ... ngid=BTAGC Quote
grampa Posted July 3, 2009 Report Posted July 3, 2009 Hi Ken and welcome, I tried to get your photo but with no joy, a lot of pattern makers on this site use Gimp (free) If you go to the help section and Village university it will tell you all you need to know to get you started. Paul Quote
Travis Posted July 4, 2009 Report Posted July 4, 2009 Hi Ken. I checked out your patterns. They look pretty good. Traditionally, portraits are cut from one piece of wood and all of the details are supported by the wood so none of the pieces fall out. It doesn't mean that your apporach to pattern making is wrong. What you have is an applique version, in which you must glue the pieces to a backer. Some scrollers use this approach to get a certain effect. I know I've used it in a couple of my own patterns. I'm assuming you're going through the GIMP class. One lesson you might find particularly interesting is the Lakes, Islands, Penninsulas and Bridges lesson. We talk about using bridges to support details so you can cut it from one piece. But we also talk about islands (the pieces that fall out) and their potential use. If you'd like someone to make a pattern of your dog, feel free to post the picture in the Pattern Requests forum. You can upload an attachment by clicking the Upload Attachment tab below your message (in the blue box). If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Everybody is very good at helping out where they can. Quote
