wombatie Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 We are in the middle of bush fire season and boy do we have some fires. I woke at 2.00am to find my bedroom full of smoke and there is not a fire within 50 kilometers of here. We are getting the smoke from 3 fronts. One is a open cut coal mine on fire and that could smoke for weeks. being outside is like being in a light fog, its awful, but better this than being in the middle of a fire. I feel for those that have lost there homes. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. Marg bobscroll 1 Quote
keefie Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 You stay safe there Marg - and better change your dust mask in the workshop for one that filters out the smoke too. wombatie and Rob Roy 2 Quote
Rob Roy Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 Hello Marg, I'll reiterate Keith's words. You stay safe. Never mind the dust mask. See if you can get a hold of a WET SUIT and a DiVERS HELMET. That should keep most of the smoke out. . Rob Roy. Phantom Scroller and wombatie 2 Quote

Ron Johnson Posted February 11, 2014 Report Posted February 11, 2014 Good morning Marg Smoke from bush or forest fires is not a healthy thing, especially for those with breathing problems. Hopefully your situation there gets better. Be safe. wombatie 1 Quote

wombatie Posted February 12, 2014 Author Report Posted February 12, 2014 Thankfully no lives have been lost in the fires but wildlife are suffering. Volunteers are out in the fire areas and where the fire fighters have managed to put out the fires, looking for injured or heat stressed animals. My daughter usually collects old towels, pillow slips and small blankets, oh and bandages and takes it all to the RSPCA to distribute to the centers that are caring for our furry friends. It was 5 years ago when we had black Saturday, when lives were close to 100 lives were lost and whole towns wiped out, lets hope we are not having a replay. Marg Quote
keefie Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 It's no good Marg, you'll have to emigrate back here to the UK. Here you won't have to worry one little bit about fires... Just drowning  Phantom Scroller, wombatie and Rob Roy 3 Quote
Nick@tinkers-cove Posted February 12, 2014 Report Posted February 12, 2014 Hope you're keeping safe Marg. Pyrography is the only acceptable form of wood burning. Think of all the waste - and lives put at risk. There are some really brave people out there. Kindest Regards, Nick. Rob Roy, LarryEA and wombatie 3 Quote

wombatie Posted February 14, 2014 Author Report Posted February 14, 2014 (edited) .Quote; CFA (Country Fire Authority) The final ALL CLEAR has been issued this week for the Mallee fires that started nearly a month ago. Lightning sparked 18 fires on the night of 14 January, and since then more than 110,000 hectares have been burnt. I wish I could post the photo that went with this quote it was awesome and scary.
