Hi Rob.

I like your work what are you finishing the pens with?

After trying several different types of finish...CA..shelacwax..and a few others and nothing wouls make the grain pop like i wanted. i wanted it to be shiney like a CA finish but when i rotate the pen in the light i wanted the grain to dance in the pen. the answer...automotive clear coat...then after 3-4 coats of clear and it set up i put pens back on lathe and hit them with micromesh and some automotive buffing compound...little bit of work but i love how the grain moves with the pen.

Thanks for all the comments guys. i really enjoy playing with my lathe...its what im messing with when not playing on scroll saw..the bowls i just finish with a homemade mix of beeswax and mineral oil. i have 4-5 other chunks of that spalted maple sitting out there i have been anxious to go tear into :)

Great work

Just a small comment : on the bolt action pens. I would remove a little more wood to be on the same level as the metal parts or maybe it's only the photo that gives this impression.

hello,

Sorry but I may not explain well what I wanted to say

look on your picture the wood is bigger than the metal part

look on my picture the wood is on the same level. you should remove wood until you reach the bushing level

ok 10-4 i see what you are saying. i try to get close to the bushings and then sand down the rest of the way. I sand to even with bushings. not sure why it looks like that. i will have to go check the pens now..lol. thanks for pointing this out.

Just a small advice

the diameter of the bushings is reduced after a number of pens so a small advice before starting your turning check the diameter of the bushings and the diameter of the pens I already have the problem with the bushings smaller and even had 2 times that the pens were bigger than the bushing. it's just a good practice to check it before. In your case no big deal because the wood is bigger. So you can unmount the pens and reduce the size but if it's smaller then you cannot do much. This is my experience I am already on my 685 pen turned all types of pens together so if you have questions don't hesitate to contact me.
