daddy_tindell Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 A few of my random turnings I have done. Some basic slimlines and bolt actions...a 50 cal twist pen I made for my brother in law..and a couple of spalted maple bowls that I salvaged the wood from a friends woodpile Lucky2, wombatie and Wilson's Woodworking 3 Quote

amazingkevin Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 That's got to be quite a job making all these, especially the bowls.Nice workmanship. Quote
Clayton717 Posted April 12, 2014 Report Posted April 12, 2014 great job. I really like the bowls. What did you finish them with? Quote
daddy_tindell Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Hi Rob. I like your work what are you finishing the pens with? After trying several different types of finish...CA..shelacwax..and a few others and nothing wouls make the grain pop like i wanted. i wanted it to be shiney like a CA finish but when i rotate the pen in the light i wanted the grain to dance in the pen. the answer...automotive clear coat...then after 3-4 coats of clear and it set up i put pens back on lathe and hit them with micromesh and some automotive buffing compound...little bit of work but i love how the grain moves with the pen. daddy_tindell Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Thanks for all the comments guys. i really enjoy playing with my lathe...its what im messing with when not playing on scroll saw..the bowls i just finish with a homemade mix of beeswax and mineral oil. i have 4-5 other chunks of that spalted maple sitting out there i have been anxious to go tear into Quote
daddy_tindell Posted April 12, 2014 Author Report Posted April 12, 2014 Teaching already...Huh Rob. lol...i do what i can figure have been hanging in the shadows on here for about a year. probably about time i come out and play. Phantom Scroller, Wilson's Woodworking and LarryEA 3 Quote

mgour Posted April 15, 2014 Report Posted April 15, 2014 (edited) Great work Just a small comment : on the bolt action pens. I would remove a little more wood to be on the same level as the metal parts or maybe it's only the photo that gives this impression. Edited April 15, 2014 by mgour Quote

Good eye...lol...yeah those were first ones i made and i was still in slimline mode. next batch i will be trying to make them a bit slimmer in the middle. Quote
mgour Posted April 17, 2014 Report Posted April 17, 2014 hello, Sorry but I may not explain well what I wanted to say look on your picture the wood is bigger than the metal part look on my picture the wood is on the same level. you should remove wood until you reach the bushing level Quote

daddy_tindell Posted April 18, 2014 Author Report Posted April 18, 2014 hello, Sorry but I may not explain well what I wanted to say look on your picture the wood is bigger than the metal part look on my picture the wood is on the same level. you should remove wood until you reach the bushing level ok 10-4 i see what you are saying. i try to get close to the bushings and then sand down the rest of the way. I sand to even with bushings. not sure why it looks like that. i will have to go check the pens now..lol. thanks for pointing this out. Phantom Scroller 1 Quote
mgour Posted April 18, 2014 Report Posted April 18, 2014 Just a small advice the diameter of the bushings is reduced after a number of pens so a small advice before starting your turning check the diameter of the bushings and the diameter of the pens I already have the problem with the bushings smaller and even had 2 times that the pens were bigger than the bushing. it's just a good practice to check it before. In your case no big deal because the wood is bigger. So you can unmount the pens and reduce the size but if it's smaller then you cannot do much. This is my experience I am already on my 685 pen turned all types of pens together so if you have questions don't hesitate to contact me. Quote
Ron Johnson Posted April 21, 2014 Report Posted April 21, 2014 Good day Rob Excellent turnings and beautifully finished. Quote
Dan Posted April 22, 2014 Report Posted April 22, 2014 Rob, it looks like the turning is good but the top of the pen has hard shadows. Playing with the lighting may help. Nice collection you have. Quote
daddy_tindell Posted April 24, 2014 Author Report Posted April 24, 2014 Thanks guys. yeah after looking at the pens there isnt a difference in size from metal to wood. i think it was angle..finish and the lighting. Lucky2 1 Quote
