  1. Just click the Mail icon in the upper right corner. It is the same icon as before the software upgrade.
  2. Last month's Scroll Saw Challenge was a lot of fun. Some really cool projects came about. It was so much fun, I'd thought we'd try it again. This one will take a bit of creativity. The theme this month is: Giving Thanks This is completely open to interpretation. It could be a traditional Thanksgiving project. Or maybe a gift of appreciation for someone. A sentiment you want to express. Post your pictures here. It can be a finished project or a pattern you designed. Get the creative juices flowing and have fun! I can't wait to see what you come up with.
  3. We've got 3 so far. We need 7 more designers. The eBook will benefit those in need by donations received from folks who download the eBook and decide to keep it. It's a great way to give a helping hand this Holiday season doing what you love. Here's who committed so far: Travis Montserrat meflick - Received Who else is in?
  4. I just heard Carter Johnson just passed away. My deepest condolences to his family. He was a super nice guy and always helpful. I've talked to him a number of times and very generous with his time and advice. He did these amazing freehand puzzles. I've always admired his skill and patience. He even sent me one of his signature postage stamp puzzles, which I still have to this day. Here's an article on Carter Johnson that was in SSW&C. http://scrollsawer.com/2009/09/10/puzzlemaster-carter-johnson/ He will be missed.
  5. Since we started this, the goal was to get 10 designers each year. We get soooooo close, but never quite there. Can we do it this year? Will this be the year we get 10 designers? If so, that means we'll have 50 new ornaments to add to our eBook this year. How awesome would that be? I'm designing. Who else is in?
  6. Halloween is over and Christmas is right around the corner. Scrollers are starting to think about gifts and patterns to cut for loved ones. But since the Holiday season is also about helping others in need, we're continuing our tradition here at Scroll Saw Village as a way to give back. This will be our 8th year of publishing an e-Book full of Christmas ornaments. This popular e-Book was featured in the Holiday 2014 issue of Scroll Saw Woodworking & Crafts magazine. Our ornaments designs are exclusive to this eBook and designed by SSV members. Anyone are can download the ebook in exchange for a donation to their favorite charity. Our hope is that we'd be able to raise some money for very worthy causes, and provide some cool patterns at the same time. But we need your help! I'll need some volunteers to design some ornaments. Each designer will provide 5 patterns (no more, no less) I ask that the designs are not made available anywhere else (this gives value to the e-book) They have to be designed specifically by you (no posting other people's patterns) Designs must be emailed (or PM) to Travis by Wednesday, November 22rd (info below) A few things to keep in mind: Religious and secular designs are accepted. Other religions/traditions also celebrate this time of year, so lets not forget them. Keep detail and size appropriate for an ornament. Don't submit copyrighted or licensed patterns. The due date will sneak up on you quicker than you think. Get them to me ASAP. What do you get in exchange? Credit for your design. The warm fuzzy feeling that you're helping others in need. Submitting your ornaments: Email the ornaments directly to Travis (travis [at] scrollsawvillage.com) or PM me. Formats accepted are JPG, PNG. Please keep the pattern in black & White only (no gray) . That way I can convert them easier when putting together the ebook. I'll also accept Inkscape files (SVG). This is ideal if you know how to use Inkscape. That way there is no conversion.
  7. One of my roles here, other than providing a place for folks to chat and make friends, is to organize information. I think there is enough content and interest to warrant a section about selling, craft shows, pattern sales, and other business topics. I think it will be an awesome resource for those interested in this topic. But don't worry, I won't be adding too many forums. This forum and the Q&A forum are the only ones I have lined up. And if it doesn't work out, I can always change it back. With that said, I will be re-organizing some of the areas of the website to make things easier to find and in a logical place. I'll be simplifying the menu, and at some point, Village University and Scroll Saw Reviews will be moved to their own section (but, I'm still working on the programming/organization). I'll be adding other sections and features too. My goal is to make SSV an awesome resource for scrollers. I'm just taking it one step of a time.
  8. Howdy all. I hope you like the new section. I could really use your help, though. We already have a ton of great discussion threads in the General Scrollsawing forum about business stuff. Could you do me a favor? Can you go through the General Scroll Sawing forum, and flag good business discussions to be moved to this new forum? It's a lot to go through and I can't do it alone. It's really easy to flag, in the upper right corner of the first forum post, there's a link that says "Report Post." Click that and in the message, just say "This would be a good discussion for the business forum." or something to that effect. Either myself or a moderator will move the discussion to the new forum. Thanks for your help! I appreciate it.
  9. Howdy All. Here's a new forum for those who are interested in the business side of the scrolling hobby. Here, you can discuss topics from making a few bucks to pay for supplies, to a full on scrolling business. A few possible topics could include: craft fairs consignment shops online sales Etsy setting up business website payment processing selling patterns marketing I hope y'all have fun. Enjoy the new forum.
  10. Howdy All! Been asking for it for a long time, and now the time is here. There is no longer a limit on the number of Likes or Reactions you can do in a day! Previously, I had a limit of 20/day. The idea was that if we were limited by the number of "Likes," we'd use them sparingly for the stuff we really like or agreed with. It also avoided the temptation to "Like" everything (which defeats the purpose). The more likes a thread or reply has, that would float to the top and easy to find the most interesting or valuable information on SSV. But now, things have changed the way they work and now we have reactions. Not only Likes, but Thanks, HaHa, Confused, and Sad. So it doesn't make much sense to limit them anymore. So I lifted all the restrictions on reactions. So knock yourself out, and click that reaction button in the corner. Have fun!
  11. Howdy All. I thought it would be fun to start incorporating some Scroll Saw Challenges on SSV. So let's start off with a Halloween challenge! The theme for this challenge is "Halloween." Post your Halloween themed finished project, or a pattern you designed here. The theme is open to interpretation. You can post something spooky, harvest, or fall related project. When you post it, say a little something about it. Maybe a little story related to the project, what inspiration you took, materials or techniques used. It doesn't have to be elaborate. But it's nice to read a little about a project and seeing the picture or pattern. I'll start. I went back to MT recently and my dad got a new DeWalt scroll saw. I've been looking at upgrading mine (an old craftsman 16") and I figured I'd try his out to see how well I like the DeWalt. I picked this pattern from SSWW&C to test it out. It was a fun project. I dabbed craft paint on the surface, leaving the inside cuts raw wood. Then I used antiquing paste wax to distress it a bit. You can find the pattern here: http://scrollsawer.com/2017/08/01/nr-festive-jack-o-lanterns/
  12. The gallery is only for photo/graphic files (gif, jpeg, jpe, jpg, png). If you wanted to post a PDF, you'd have to do that in the forums. Forum posts will allow many other file extensions.
  13. Lets say that someone asks a question, and another member answers it. Then 10 other members agree with the member that answered the question and up-voted the answer, it's safe to assume that is probably the best answer to the question asked. It doesn't necessarily mean that the other answers are wrong, just most agree with the one that gets up-voted the most. The person who asked the question doesn't have to choose the best answer. But if they want, they can choose the one they went with. This also gives valuable info to others who are looking for the answer to the same or similar question. So, to up-vote or agree with a question, click the up arrow. Likewise, you can disagree with an answer too, by clicking the down arrow. If you are the person who asked the question, you can select the answer you choose to use by clicking the check mark.
  14. I'd like to try my hand at cutting some 3d compound cutting patterns. What kind of blade works best for cutting through that thick of material?
  15. Howdy all. I've added a new feature that I hope folks will like. This is an Q&A forum where you can get your questions answered. Sometimes, when you have a question, they can get lost in the forum. This is a special forum for those types of questions. I hope this will be a place to get your questions answered quickly and allow you to be confident in the best answer offered by SSV members. Here's the way it works. If you have a question that requires a best answer, post them here. Other members can answer your question. But sometimes, the question has already been answered by another member. In that case, you can vote up (or down) the best answer. The more votes an answer gets from SSV members, you'll be confident that is the best answer to your question. The best answer (with the most votes) will always be at the top. And if you asked the original question, you can choose the best answer to your question so others know the solution you chose. Sometimes, someone asks a really good question. You can also rank questions, so they float to the top too. At the top of the forum will be two tabs. The first tab is "Popular questions of the past month." As you can imagine, this will list popular questions from the last 30 days. Popular questions would be a thread with a lot of posts or votes. The next tab is "Questions with No Best Answer." This is an important tab that you can use to help out. Check out that area to see if there are unanswered questions you can help out with. Once the forum fills out a bit, it will be a neat place to browse and pick up tips.
  16. Be safe everyone. Please heed any evacuation orders. Irma looks angry and not in a forgiving mood.
  17. Hi All. Thanks to everybody who filled out the SSV survey. I found it very helpful. This helps me identify areas of improvement and other areas which I probably shouldn't mess with. Thanks! You guys are awesome!

Thanks for the suggestion, Blame. We have the Works in Progress forum which is meant for both progression pictures and formal tutorials. Handi created a nice video on pattern application not too long ago. Hopefully we can get a few more tutorials posted too! So if you got an idea, show us how its done! Wink wink, nudge nudge.

Hi Blame, That would be great if you could put together some articles. Especially on the basics and machine maintenance. You'd be surprised how difficult it is to find some of the basic information. It would be a great help for those who are just starting in the hobby. The goal of this website is to have information freely available and accessible (and having a little fun in the process). We really want to bring in and encourage new and seasoned scrollers, alike. So the more information we have, the better! With that being said, I'm working on a new feature that I'm really excited about. I probably won't unveil it until late Feb or the beginning of March. But I think everybody will really enjoy it (and you'll certainly get a kick out of it). But mum's the word for now. As far as our other obsessions. I'd certainly be OK with adding a forum discussing other forms of woodworking. Since this is primarily a scroll saw website, I'd probably limit it to a single forum for general woodworking talk. I think most scrollers dabble in other forms of woodworking, whether it be turning, toy making, furniture building, pyrography, tole painting, etc. It would be a fun way to discuss our other hobbies! So if there's enough interest, I can get 'er done.
  20. I took a look and it doesn't seem like I have control over that. It's probably not a bad thing, since the "Mark Forum Read" and "Start New Topic" buttons are so close to each other.
  21. I finished the upgrade. Everything looks to be in place. Some of the colors are a bit wonky, so I'll fiddle around with that as I get a chance. One cool new feature, instead of the Like button, we now have a heart button. If you hover over it, you can choose different kinds of "likes" like Thanks, Ha Ha, Confused, Sad, and Heart. I think they added a few other features too, that I'll look at closer as I get the chance.
  22. Howdy all. I just wanted to give y'all a heads up that I'll be upgrading our forum software sometime today (or tomorrow, depending on how busy I get). It's just a version upgrade and patch, so it should be painless. SSV might be off for a short time (maybe 5 minutes or so). I'll update this thread once it's complete. Remember that if SSV is not available, you can find information and updates on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/scrollsawvillage/
  23. Howdy All. I'll be heading out on vacation back to my home state of Montana. I won't be in the middle of the woods without internet like last month, but I'll be hit and miss throughout the week while I visit friends and family. So if I don't get back to you right away, you'll know why. Have a good week filled with sawdust!
  24. Hmmm. I tried it on IE 11 and seemed to work fine. I prefer Google Chrome or Firefox. They seem to work the best with SSV. The only thing I can think of is make sure your Java is up to date. But I don't think that would interfere with your browsing.
  25. I've added a tutorial to the Articles section under Using SSV. You can find that here:
