  1. Short of working in a wind tunnel with the wind at your back the ONLY safe way is to wear a respirator, a good one and to have some form of air filtration system working in the shop. I know it's uncomfortable and for those that wear glasses can be a bit of a challenge to find one that will not interfere with them or fog them up however to prove a point that Multifasited has made, get one of those over the ear dust masks and put it on the next time you are cutting and you will be shocked at how much sawdust is generated that you are breathing. Below is just a few of the more common woods we use and the reported side effects of the saw dust. Pine (Pinus genus) - irritant, runny nose, asthma Oak (Quercus genus) - irritant, sensitizer, asthma, NPC (Nasopharyngeal carcinoma, or sometimes called nasopharyngeal cancer) (rare) Birch (Betula genus) - irritant, sensitizer, nausea Cedar, Aromatic Red - irritant Douglas-fir - irritant, giddiness, splinters go septic, nausea Maple (Acer genus) - irritant, sensitizer, asthma; HP ( Severe lung inflammation ) in spalted maple Travis posted back in 2010 a toxicity list, here is a link to it. http://www.scrollsawvillage.com/topic/5848-wood-toxicity-chart/?hl=%2Bwood+%2Btoxicity+%2Blist Now not everyone is or will be adversely affected however why take the chance wear a dust mask, a good one if possible when cutting and sanding. I have had 2 friends end up in the hospital with allergic reactions to the sawdust from Yellow Heart since I have asthma I wear a mask and I have a running air filter system in the shop to help keep the floating micro dust contained. Did I mention that floating micro saw dust can be explosive? In the right conditions a gas water heater, Furnace, space heater could set the floating dust off, not common but possible. Seriously. Just another reason to keep the saw dust under control. DW
  2. Nicely done Kevin. Sit back, prop yer feet up and have a beer or three. Thanks for sharing these with us. DW
  3. I like them, especially the sail boat and lighthouse. That one would look great with a driftwood frame perhaps? Thanks for sharing these with us. DW
  4. The toner cartridges that come with the printer initially are not fill much. I have had and used a laser printer since 1995. The current one I have I purchased in 2000. It is old but works great... no bells and whistles, no scanner, no fax just the printer. It takes a standard 2612A HP cartridge and that lasts a long time. I recently purchased a pack of 5 of them for $80. More than enough toner for several years hehe. DW

  8. Very nicely done Angela. Question for you on the paint and finish; What did you use? Myself I use water based acrylics to paint with and top coating with a lacquer ( perfectly human safe once fully cured ) or sometimes a water based wipe on poly. I really like that elephant puzzle. Thanks for sharing it with us. Tell your husband he done good DW

  20. Len bamboo can be tough on blades, the "hardness" varies a bit but if you think about it this is being used for flooring so its going to be pretty tough. If I had to guess for a comparison of another wood that would be marble wood. You can not rush working with bamboo. Sharp blades cut well, slightly dull blades burn it much like cherry. DW
  21. Take a break .. make a bowl... drink a beer... have some fun in the sun...you live in Florida after all hehe. Those look good Kevin. Thanks for sharing them with us. DW
  22. Bowls are pretty easy especially these basic ones. Just take your time laying it out, cutting sanding and finishing and you have something that folks will go you must have done that on a lathe. It is fun to watch their expressions when you tell them that no lathe was used to make the bowl, just your scroll saw, some sandpaper and elbow grease. There is a very good book out that was done by Carole Rothman - http://www.amazon.com/Wooden-Bowls-Scroll-Easy---Make/dp/1565234332/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1426793996&sr=8-1&keywords=wooden+bowls+from+the+scroll+saw Well worth owing. DW
  23. I was given 3/4 of a box of 14mm thick bamboo flooring a couple of months back and this is one of the projects from just 1/2 of one of the boards. I glued together 2 pieces of 3 1/2 inch wide x 7 inches long flooring and then cut this bowl from it. The bowl is 6 inches in diameter and about 2 1/4 high. Finished with Tung Oil. DW
