  1. Thanks for the great idea John. Never would have thought of it. Gary
  2. Great idea, I never thought of doing it. Gary
  3. Travis I join the others in thanking you for all of your work. Those of us who are computer challenged are most appreciative of all that you do. Gary
  4. I wish you luck indeed Travis. I, like many others really enjoy the site and appreciate all your work. Gary
  5. I too use blue painters tape on the wood and have used a spray adhesive from Hobby Lobby, can't think of the name right now. Ran out the other day and picked up a can of Elmers in the craft department at Wal Mart and it worked fine. The tape I believe is the key and peeling it off with no glue residue is great. Gary
  6. Once again Travis thanks for the help. I will look into the Inkscape solution. Gary
  7. How do I go about enlarging a pattern. I have one printed out but need to make it larger. Is there a program or something available to do it. I have tried on my own in GIMP but did not succeed. I can get it larger on the screen but when I print it there is no change. Probably a simple question for someone with some computer smarts, but I'm not one of those people. Thanks in advance for any help. Gary
  8. Other than projects I make for my wife I give them away. Haven't sold any, want to keep my amateur standing. Gary
  9. I agree with the above. Experience is the best teacher. Watch videos on line, visit the blogs and cut. Enjoy your new hobby. Gary
  10. I made keychain holders from Steve Good's site for family at Christmas. My grandson called to say he broke his and requested a new one. I took it to the post office to get a box to mail it in and had requests for 7 more from folks at the post office. Finished them today. Gary
  11. I agree, would have started with the better saw. Gary
  12. Thanks for the information. Amazing what can be learned on these sites. Gary
  13. Looking for something to do when I retired. Had no interest prior to that. Started just doing some wood working in general, building yard ornaments etc. Found myself on various blogs and some how got on to the scrolling sections and finally bought a Ryobi, didn't want to spend much till I determined if I would like it. After a couple of years decided I must enjoy it so upgraded to the DeWalt and have been with it since then. Enjoy making things to give to friends and family. Gary
  14. I have my Dewalt sitting on a bench I built. I sit at a stool I built to make me comfortable at the bench. I really like Steve's lemon oil bath and spray technique. Simple and the wood looks good. Gary
  15. I too have the Ryobi and it works for me. Have never used another one so can't make any comparisons. Gary
  16. Thanks Travis. This is a great resource. Gary
  17. Nicely done. I'm sure they appreciated the gift. Good to hear you are getting back to making sawdust. Gary
  18. Steve I have the design and do intend to hang the winners names from the bottom on a football shape. My question has to do with what type of wood would be best to use for the thin piece I scroll the design into, which will be attached to the larger piece of wood which will serve as the back of the plaque. I intend to make the back about 1/2 inch of a dark wood to show through the scrolled piece. I would normally probably do the scrolled piece in baltic birch but thought it might look better on the edges if it was something other than ply. They will be showing. Appreciate your response. Gary
  19. I am going to make a plaque for the winner of our fantasy football league. It will be passed from year to year with the new winners name added at the bottom. I am doing a plaque to have a piece of wood thick enough to attach winner names as the years go by. I am thinking of a nice piece of hardwood for the actual plaque and then a scrolled piece to glue to it with. My question is what would you use for the scrolled piece of wood. I want something that the edges are presentable on as they will be visible, not hidden in a frame. I am interested in your thoughts. Thanks, Gary
  20. I add my thanks to the pattern makers, but in addition to all the fine folks who so willingly answer questions from those of us who are in need of help. It is comforting to know that one can get an answer to a question or find a great pattern to cut. THANK YOU.
  21. Thanks for the instructions it worked. Gary
  22. Thanks to the patience of Travis I have completed my first portrait using Gimp. I would like to reluctantly send it for others to critique however I don't know how to do it. I understand that after I have saved it as a xcf file I need to send it again as a JPEG file, now I presume I have it saved twice and that it is the JPEG file I will be sending. My question is how do I do it. Again my thanks for all the help I have received on this great forum. Gary
  23. Travis, I have started the GIMP program and have run into a problem. I was on lesson 4 at the time and posted my question there and realized you may not be looking there any longer as most have gone beyond that point long ago. Will appreciate any help you can give me, am determined to get through the GIMP training. Thank you for providing it.
  24. Just wondering, what is your favorite wood when you are cutting ornaments?
  25. Travis, my planer is the tool that got me to purchase hearing protection. Just a couple of hours one day and my ears rang for a day. Hope you are O.K. Gary
